Father’s Day cake decorating event offered
Decorate your own Dairy Queen cake for Father’s Day at this event on June 15 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Boardman Dairy Queen (6120 Market St,), Canfield Dairy Queen (101 S.Broad St,) and Cornersburg Dairy Queen (3555 S. Meridian Road) and from 1-4 p.m. at the Austintown Dairy Queen (136 N.Canfield Niles Road). This is an open house event. It should only take about 15 minutes to decorate your Dairy Queen cake. Remember, it is an “ice cream” cake, so it will begin to melt if you take too long. Dairy Queen staff are happy to keep your cake in their freezer so that you can eat, relax and enjoy. The cost to participate is the cost of the Dairy Queen cake. You do not need an appointment. Walk-ins are welcome. However, they can not guarantee cake size or decorator assistance without an appointment.
Blizzard treat to celebrate Apollo 11 anniversary
The Austintown Dairy Queen (146. N. Canfield Niles Road), Boardman Dairy Queen (6120 Market St.), Canfield Dairy Queen (101 S. Broad St.) and Cornersburg Dairy Queen (3555 S. Meridian Road) will be offering the Zero Gravity Blizzard beginning on June 24, available while supplies last. The treat is available to celebrate fans’ love of outer space and marks the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 and man walking on the moon. It is available at a special price point and has black glitter base, blue glitter base, galaxy sprinkles, cotton candy syrup and Oreo cookies.
Balto: a history of humans, huskies and health in Alaska
The library is bringing the Cleveland Museum of Natural History to you. Join in with the Boardman library on July 24 at 2 p.m. as we learn about the story of Balto and the heroic dogs and mushers of the 1925 Alaskan Serum Run, and compare their experience to the Iditarod of today through video conferencing with the museum. They will have a kit of equipment used to enable humans and huskies to survive in harsh arctic conditions to examine during the show. Space is limited. Barn yard petting zoo
A trailer full of animals is coming to the Boardman library parking lot for three hours on July 11, from 5-8 p.m. All animals are safe and secure within their own space in the trailer and sanitary hand-cleanser is provided to be used after petting the animals. Play lawn games and have a treat as you wait to enter the petting zoo, which has a minimum of 16 animals. A rain date will be announced, if needed.
Legends of Asgard
Local teenagers will gather to perform and celebrate the ancient myths of Norse culture at the Boardman library on July 29 at 2 p.m. Learn how Odin became the god he is and how he met his mighty end. Celebrate with the library as these talented young people teach an interesting history lesson through a fantastic performance. This event is for school-age children.
Bonding with babies and books
Meet at the Boardman library on July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30 at 10 a.m. for Bonding with Babies and Books, for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. The event features 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Read a story and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten at this event at the Boardmab library on July 17 at 10 a.m. Activities will vary at each program. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This event is for ages 2-6.

Adult fans of young adult literature from ages 18 and older, this book club, which will take place on July 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library, is for you. They will discuss “Sadie” by Courtney Summers. Light refreshments served. This event is for adults.

Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published. The July 8 event will take place at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library where they will discuss “The Coddling of the American Mind” by Greg Lukianoff. This event is for adults.

Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade. Italian Fest looking for nominations
The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the Year. Secure drug disposal now offered at Akron Children’s in Boardman
Akron Children’s Hospital is now collecting unused prescription medications in a secure dropbox at the Beeghly Campus in Boardman. The hospital recently installed the collection box that is part of the LifeInCheck Consumer Drug Take-Back program. It’s located at 6505 Market St. in the lobby of Building A. While many communities participate in annual drug collection events, having the receptacle available permanently will allow Akron Children’s to provide the public with an easily accessible site to dispose of unwanted prescription and over-the-counter medications. Accepted in the dropbox are unused or expired prescription and over-the-counter medications and pet medications. Not accepted are illegal drugs, inhalers, needles, liquids and lotions. Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15
The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. YSU to offer robotics and 3D printing camps
Youngstown State University’s Ohio Youth Entrepreneurship Program will host two camp programs this summer for students in middle school and high school. Biz3D is a four-day camp where high school students learn about what it takes to start a business and how 3D printing can be used. Students will have hands-on experience with 3D printing and design, learn a computer-aided design program and explore the business, educational and career opportunities and skills of this emerging technology. A field trip to the Youngstown Business Incubator and America Makes is planned. The camp will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 24-27, at Valley STEM+ME2, located at 7300 Palmyra Road in Canfield. Learn to build a robot, program it and compete in exciting challenges at the three-day Vex IQ Robotics Camp. This hands-on camp is for upcoming sixth through eighth graders, and robotics experience is not necessary. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA.
