Memorial ride to take place on June 15

Local bikers are invited to raise awareness and funds for autism on June 15. The seventh annual Mike Hull Memorial Ride for Autism will host a whole afternoon of fun and activities for the entire family. There will be a 10 a.m. registration at West Side Bowl, located at 2617 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown, and a 11:45 a.m. blessing of the bikes. At 12 p.m., the run begins. Past rides have traveled from Lake Milton to Salem to Columbiana and back again . There will be bowling and a pizza party noon until 10 p.m., free for all children and adults with special needs thanks to the generous gift of Nate and Jamie Offerdahl, owners of West Side Bowl. At 5 p.m., the last bike will come in and there will be a live performance by Stormy Weather Band, food, raffles and fun. The cost for riders to participate is $10 per rider, and this includes food ticket and music. The cost for a non-rider is $10 food ticket/children 12 and under are $5. There will also be a Chinese raffle and 50/50. Proceeds will support the programming of the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley helping families and individuals with autism in the tri-county area. Mike Hull was a beloved husband, father, brother and grandfather of a granddaughter on the autism spectrum that he cherished. He was also a musician who loved playing and donated his time and talent to organizations in need. Hull’s generosity did not stop when his earthly life ended in 2012, but continued by becoming an organ donor where his generous gift helped hundreds. Father’s Day cake decorating event offered

Decorate your own Dairy Queen cake for Father’s Day at this event on June 15 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Boardman Dairy Queen (6120 Market St.), Canfield Dairy Queen (101 S.Broad St.) and Cornersburg Dairy Queen (3555 S. Meridian Road) and from 1-4 p.m. at the Austintown Dairy Queen (136 N.Canfield Niles Road). This is an open house event. It should only take about 15 minutes to decorate your Dairy Queen cake. Remember, it is an “ice cream” cake, so it will begin to melt if you take too long. Dairy Queen staff are happy to keep your cake in their freezer so that you can eat, relax and enjoy. The cost to participate is the cost of the Dairy Queen cake. You do not need an appointment to participate in this event. Walk-ins are welcome. However, they can not guarantee cake size or decorator assistance without an appointment.

Blizzard to celebrate Apollo 11 anniversary

The Austintown Dairy Queen (146. N. Canfield Niles Road), Boardman Dairy Queen (6120 Market St.), Canfield Dairy Queen (101 S. Broad St.) and Cornersburg Dairy Queen (3555 S. Meridian Road) will be offering the Zero Gravity Blizzard beginning on June 24, available while supplies last. The treat is available to celebrate fans’ love of outer space and marks the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 and man walking on the moon. It is available at a special price point and has black glitter base, blue glitter base, galaxy sprinkles, cotton candy syrup and Oreo cookies.

Class of 1959 to meet for 60th reunion

The Austintown Fitch High Class of 1959 is celebrating their 60th class reunion at a two day event. On Aug. 30, a meet and greet will take place at 5-7 p.m. at Hollywood Gaming, and on Aug. 31, a class breakfast at Davidson’s will take place at 9 a.m. and a social hour and sit down dinner at will take place at 5 p.m. at The Upstairs Restaurant. Legends of Asgard

Local teenagers will gather to perform and celebrate the ancient myths of Norse culture at the Austintown library on July 17 at 11 a.m. Learn how Odin became the god he is and how he met his mighty end. Celebrate with the library as these talented young people teach an interesting history lesson through a fantastic performance. This event is for school-age children.

Learn how to create your own mobile apps with MIT APP inventor and explore robotics at this free Techie Camp at the Austintown library on July 22-26 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day. Navigating the stars

Have you ever wondered how ancient people told time? Got from point A to point B without a smartphone or compass? Made it through the Underground Railroad, or went to far away countries over the seven seas? Learn about navigating by following the stars with Lindsay Sprague from Winterberry Homestead at this event at the Austintown library on July 2 at 7 p.m. Learn which constellations matter most in the northern and southern hemispheres. Best of all, take home a star map and learn how to participate in orienteering and other activities in your own neighborhood. This event is for adults and teens.

Gamblers Anonymous Meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Bonding with babies and books

Meet at the Austintown library on July 2, 9, 16 and 23 at 10 a.m. for Bonding with Babies and Books, for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. The event features 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Austintown library on July 3 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Pre-kindergarten story time

This program, which will take place on July 5 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. They will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten.

Gotta Move story time

This story time, which will take place on July 11 and 18 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join in for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Moon Landing Party

Beginner’s cricut

Join the Austintown library on July 15 at 10:30 a.m. where they will be exploring the basics of a Cricut Explore Air 2: including the machine, tools, and how to locate designs. People always say the book is better than the movie. This book club will get together to read and discuss books that are soon to be released in the theaters. On July 18 at 7 p.m. at the Austintown library, they will discuss “The Woman in the Window,” by A. J. Finn. Come to talk about books, movies, have a small snack and meet new people. Cardinal Mooney High School announces summer camp series

Cardinal Mooney High School has announced their summer camp series. All camps will take place at the school, located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown, and range in age from kindergarten through eighth-grade. Spay and neuter clinic offers local event

Alleycat Spay and Neuter Clinic will be coming to the Austintown Ohio area for additional dates for its low cost spay/neuter transport program. Alleycat’s transport van will be transporting patients to and from Tractor Supply Austintown, located at 6225 Mahoning Ave. in Austintown, on July 3 and Aug. 7. The drop off time is between 8:30-9 a.m. and the pick up time is between 3:30-4 p.m. (Clients will pick up and drop off patients to our staff members at the Tractor Supply parking lot). Clients will be required to provide proof of a current rabies vaccination for their pet, otherwise they will be required to receive a new rabies vaccine during their clinic visit (rabies vaccine at time of surgery is $9). One pet per crate, and the crate should be a hard carrier. The cost for a female cat spay surgery with transport is $60. The cost for a male cat neuter surgery with transport is $50. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie at the Austintown library on June 25 at 6 p.m. The movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Italian Fest looking for nominations

The Greater Youngstown Italian Fest 2019 is seeking nominations for the Italian Man and the Italian Woman of the Year. The nominees would be considered for the highest honor and if selected would be introduced in person at the opening ceremony at 5 p.m. on Aug. 2, in downtown Youngstown. The Oakland Center for the Arts presents “Rumpelstiltskin”

The Oakland Center for the Arts Kids’ First Theater Incentive will present the beloved Grimm Brothers’ tale, “Rumpelstiltskin,” adapted and directed by Patricia Fagan at the Austintown library on June 25 at 11 a.m. Audience members will help the actors bring the rollicking story to a “happily ever after” ending. Mother Earth and Green Team

Join the Green Team this summer at the Austintown library for a fun and exciting program on June 26 at 10 a.m. Mother Earth herself will be reading the book, “Dear Children of the Earth” by Schim Schimmel. This powerful and dramatically illustrated letter from Mother Earth to her children is a tender reminder of the responsibility we all have to protect the world in which we live. After reading the book we’ll create earth-friendly crafts made from recovered material. At the conclusion of the program, participants will receive Earth-themed coloring books and recycling information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in grades pre-K through 5.

Toy box takeover

Join the Austintown library on June 20 at 6 p.m. as they travel out of this world and straight into the toy box. They will celebrate the upcoming box office release of the latest chapter in a tale of our favorite play-time characters. Enjoy an evening of fun with games, activities, crafts and a snack. Music festival to take place locally

The Westside Music Festical will take place June 15-16, from 2 p.m. until 2 a.m., at Westside Bowl, located at 2617 Mahoning Ave. in Youngstown. This one-day music festival will feature performances by Frayle, Johnathan Brown, A Moment in Pompeii, Snake Charmer, Hodgie Sev Enteen, Jason Bka J. Howell, Oregon Space Trail of Doom, Suitcase Runaway, Public Squares, Mister, Sierra Madre and The Venus Flytraps. It will showcase artwork by Anakin Skywalk, LashaDey, Ryan Fisher and more. Austintown schools to sponsor summer food program

The Austintown Local School District will again sponsor the summer food service program for children. Free meals will be made available to all children ages 1-18 at the Austintown Elementary School, located at 245 Idaho Road-Lynn Kirk Loop. Meals will be served Monday through Friday from June 3-Aug. 16. Breakfast will be served from 7:45-9 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Contact Jayme Rarick, food service supervisor, at 330-797-3900, ext. 2032 with questions or for more information.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 15

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at the Avalon Lakes Golf and Country Club on July 15. The cost is $110 per golfer. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18-hole four-person scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle. Italian Fest looking for nominations

Summer Discovery Program

Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Participants will receive a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher just for signing up.

YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition

YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA.
