Cavs hire Cal women’s coach as assistant
CLEVELAND
The Cavaliers have hired California coach Lindsay Gottlieb as an assistant on John Beilein’s staff.
Gottlieb spent the past eight years coaching the Golden Bears, leading them to seven NCAA Tournament appearances. While she’s not the first female assistant coach in the NBA, she is the first to go from being a head college coach to the pro league.
Gottlieb went 179-89 at Cal and led the school to its first Final Four in 2013.
Cavaliers general manager Koby Altman says Gottlieb will “be a great addition” for Beilein, who is taking over a young Cleveland team after a 12-year stint at Michigan. Altman says Gottlieb “brings a depth of basketball knowledge, leadership, perspective and approach to her craft that will fit very well with our team and staff alike.”

Titans retiring George, late McNair’s numbers
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
Controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk says nobody with the Titans will ever wear Eddie George’s No. 27 nor the No. 9 of the late Steve McNair again, players who helped the franchise through its difficult relocation from Houston to Tennessee to its lone Super Bowl berth.
Strunk announced Wednesday that the franchise will retire both numbers Sept. 15 at their home opener against Indianapolis.
The Titans said this will be the first time an NFL team has retired either a No. 9 or 27.
