Torch Club to host presentation Monday

The Youngstown Torch Club will sponsor a presentation about the origins of the Mahoning Valley’s Italian-American community at 5:30 p.m. Monday in Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University. The speaker will be Ben Lariccia, co-author of the upcoming book, “Coal War in the Mahoning Valley: The Origin of Greater Youngstown’s Italians,” who will discuss the circumstances under which the first Italian immigrants arrived. The club was chartered in 1927 and is an organization of professional people who gather once a month to listen to a paper presentation, have dinner, and discuss the presentation. Summer STEAM camps scheduled

YWCA Mahoning Valley will offer Y-Girls STEAM Ahead, a series of summer camp programs held at the Youngstown location, 25 W. Rayen Ave., intended for girls in middle school. Y-Girls aims to address the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by providing resources and workshops to engage interests in STEAM fields and keep them interested for future STEAM careers. Registration is open for two camps in Youngstown at $60 per camp:

June 17-21: Summer Manufacturing Institute. Summer Manufacturing Institute returned to YWCA with its partners at Oh WOW! Explore the world of manufacturing with field trips and site visits that offer hands-on learning experiences. Participants can show off their skills at a reception for family the last day of camp.

June 24-28: Multimedia Communications. Participants will visit local radio and TV stations to learn how the news is made. Chase leads, conduct interviews, take footage, write stories, and produce a magazine. Launch the magazine at a release party for family the last day of camp. Library to host Google class Tuesday

A class to teach participants how to successfully search on the Google search engine will take place in the Quaker Room of Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., at 6:30 p.m. June 18. Technology instructor Kathy Bennett will lead the class for adults. If possible, bring a device to practice on. Seating is limited and registration is required.
