Checkers, ex-Phantom Renouf win Calder Cup

The Charlotte Checkers beat the Chicago Wolves 5-3 in Game 5 Saturday to win the franchise’s first Calder Cup.

The Checkers are the AHL affiliate for the Carolina Hurricanes.

Former Phantoms defenseman Dan Renouf (2011-13) was a part of the championship team. He did not play in the win due to injury.

Renouf had a 24-2-22 line for the Checkers during the regular season. He had a goal and two assists during the team’s run to the title in the postseason.

Murdick, Martin win at Mercer Raceway

Dave Murdick, the veteran Big Block Modified driver from Butler, Pa., wrestled the lead away from Jimmy Holden early in the Diehl Ram sponsored twenty-five lapper and then he kept points leader Rex King, Jr. at bay to claim his first win of the season at Michaels Mercer Raceway.

Joining him in victory lane were Greg Dobrosky (Hards Welding and Fabrication/River Valley Butcher Block Racesaver 305 Sprint Cars), Erik Martin (Turn 4 Toilets Fastrak Limited Modifieds), Shane Shook (Ray’s Racing Collectibles/Eperthener’s Auto Wrecking Mini Stocks), and Rod Jones (Barris Trucking Modified Lites).

YSU volleyball coaches to host summer camps

Youngstown

The Youngstown State volleyball coaches will host three individual camps and two team camps on YSU’s campus in July.

YSU head coach Aline Scott and the volleyball camp staff will host the team camps on back-to-back weekends, July 12-14 and July 19-21, and three individual camps will run concurrently on June 15-17. The Little Spikers Camp is designed for players in grades 1-3, and there will also be an All Skills Camp and an Elite Camp.

The team camps will emphasize competition and will cost $215 per resident camper and $165 per commuter. There is also an option to attend a three-hour practice session on the first day of each camp that will cost an additional $35 per player.

The Little Spikers Camp is open to players in grades 1-3 of all genders, and the All Skills Camp is open to players in grades 4-12 of all genders. The camps will run concurrently from 9 a.m. to noon each day from July 15-17, and the cost for each camp will be $90.

The Elite Camp is designed for players with varsity or club experience who would like to play volleyball at the collegiate level. There will be sessions from 9 a.m.-noon and 1- 4 p.m. on July 15-16.

Tony Parker retiring after 18 NBA seasons

CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Four-time NBA champion Tony Parker has announced he’s retiring after 18 seasons.

The 37-year-old guard made the announcement on Twitter Monday He played 17 seasons for the San Antonio Spurs and made the postseason every year of his career before joining the Hornets. He was selected to the All-Star team six times and was named second-team All-NBA three times.

Parker started 1,151 games regular season games and averaged 15.5 points and 5.6 assists per game.

Winslow Jr. convicted in rape case

SAN DIEGO

Former NFL player Kellen Winslow Jr. — the son of a Hall of Famer who himself earned more than $40 million during his career — has been convicted of raping a 58-year-old homeless woman last year in his picturesque beach community of Encinitas, north of San Diego.

A jury returned the verdict Monday in San Diego Superior Court in Vista but was expected to continue to deliberating on two more counts of rape involving a 54-year-old hitchhiker and an unconscious teenage girl in 2003.
