Hilltop Elementary School fourth-grade students brought out their inner scientist for the school’s annual Science Fair on May 24.
The students exhibited their experiments and results for family, friends and fellow students in the school’s gymnasium.
The students worked on their projects while being guided step-by-step by their fourth-grade teachers.
Each student was required to conduct a scientific experiment on a topic that interested them and was then required to create a display board describing their experiment.
Each display included the project’s problem to be solved, the student’s hypothesis, the materials used, the procedure of the experiment, the results and a conclusion in which the student stated if his or her hypothesis was correct or incorrect and what he or she had learned from the experiment.
Students could also include photos of themselves conducting their experiment, charts, diagrams, illustrations, histograms and graphs on their displays. Several also had hands-on demonstrations.
The students stood by their display boards in the gym and were available to explain their projects to attendees and fellow students and answer any questions they may have had concerning the topic.
The fourth-graders chose a variety of topics, such as: Which type of fire extinguisher puts out grease fires the fastest? Which brand makes the hottest cup of coffee? What plant grows the fastest? Which fruit produces the most energy? How long will it take for the red Skittle to lose its color? Which type of vanilla ice cream melts the fastest? Which bat hits the ball the furthest? Do cooling mints really cool? Which bubble gum brand blows the biggest bubble? And which ball bounces the highest?
Each student received a red participant ribbon from their teacher to hang on their display board and take home as a souvenir of the science fair.
