Melewski won’t return as Canfield softball coach

CANFIELD

Ray Melewski, Canfield High School’s varsity softball head coach for eight seasons, has been told his contract will not be renewed for 2020.

Melewski said he met on Tuesday with Mike Cochran, Canfield’s incoming athletic director, to talk about field renovations. Instead, Cochran told Melewski his contract would not be renewed.

“I don’t know why,” Melewski said Wednesday. “He said they want to go in a different direction.

“I can’t believe it, it hasn’t sunk in yet,” Mewlewski said. “I guess it won’t until next winter when it’s time for conditioning to begin.”

Melweski’s teams went 146-67 and made three regional appearances — two in Division II and one in Div. I. This season, the Cardinals went 9-11-1 and 5-4 in the All-American Conference Red Tier. In the Div. I sectional final on May 8, Boardman ousted Canfield, 6-0.
