UPDATE | Warren PD ID's victim; teen remains held in shooting

WARREN — The Warren Police Department has identified the man who was shot to death Tuesday afternoon on Maryland Street Northwest as Shyhiem W. Williams, 24, of Robert Avenue Northwest.

The other male who was shot and injured is Jackqwuan K. Williams, 25, of Webb Avenue Southwest. It is not known whether they are related.

The shootings happened at the Warren Heights Apartments.

Dareontai Carmichael, 16, of Porter Street Northeast, who is being held in the juvenile justice center in the shootings of both men, will remain there while authorities continue to consider formal charges against him. They are also considering whether to charge him as an adult.

Carmichael appeared before Juvenile Magistrate Terry Swauger in juvenile court today. Swauger explained to Carmichael that he is being held on murder and felonious assault charges, both with gun specifications.

Those are the charges prosecutors will be filing later, Swauger said.

Carmichael's next hearing will be 10 a.m. Monday. At that time, charges are expected to be finalized, and a plea will be entered for him. He was represented at today's hearing by Atty. Rob Kokor with the public defender's office.

Cameras were not allowed in the courtroom. Carmichael spoke briefly with his mother before he stood before the magistrate. The slim young man said "yes sir" and "no sir" to the two questions Swauger asked him. After the short hearing, juvenile officials escorted him back out of the courtroom.

A police department press release said a male suspect, now identified as Carmichael, was taken into custody a few blocks away from the shootings a short time after 2:30 p.m. A female, also 16, was questioned in the case but was not turned over to the juvenile justice center.

When police arrived at the apartment complex, they found Shyheim Williams on the ground on the parking lot behind the apartment with gunshot wounds to the hip and shoulder.Jackqwuan K. Williams had been shot in the leg but left the area on his own.

Police learned Shyhiem Williams died about 5:25 p.m.

Jackqwuan K. Williams arrived at the Trumbull Regional Medical Center seeking treatment and was later transferred to St. Elizabeth's.

A witness told The Vindicator she heard about three gunshots and saw a crowd of about 30 people in the parking area behind the apartment building.

She saw one man with serious gunshot wounds still on the asphalt after the shots rang out and and saw another bleeding man leaving the area on foot.
