YSU 4th in McCafferty Trophy standings

Indianapolis

After posting a Horizon League-high five regular-season championships, Youngstown State finished fourth in the McCafferty Trophy standings with 33.5 points, the league announced on Tuesday. YSU also placed tied for second with 19 points in the men’s all sports championship.

The Penguins swept the track and field titles, winning the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor championships, and also capturing the men’s cross country crown.

Named in honor of James J. McCafferty, who served as the conference’s first commissioner from 1979-80, the McCafferty Trophy is awarded annually by the Horizon League to a member institution compiling the greatest number of performance points, based on its finish in the League’s 19 championship sports.

Class B teams in Ohio baseball tournament

A trio of area ballparks will be a part of the fourth annual Midwest Challenge Tournament this weekend.

Cene Park, Austintown Fitch and Warren Harding will be sites in the Northeast Ohio baseball tournament. Midwest Challenge expects approximately 20 colleges to attend.

The tournament runs Thursday through Sunday and will span the 14-U through 18-U levels.

Prospect Wire partnered with the Midwest Challenge to create better exposure for participants. Prospect Wire employees will cover the games and upload video to the Prospect Wire Twitter account.

Other tournament sites include Kent State, Walsh and Baldwin Wallace universities and Oberlin and Hiram colleges.

Class B Secretary Tim Joyce said a majority of the teams in the league will participate. He said “only a couple teams” of the league’s 27 won’t play.

Phillies OF McCutchen has season-ending ACL

SAN DIEGO

Andrew McCutchen tore his ACL in a rundown and will miss the rest of the season, causing the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies to again reshuffle their outfield.

McCutchen hurt his left knee during Monday night’s game against San Diego and an MRI revealed the injury.

“It’s not the news I wanted to hear,” McCutchen said Tuesday.

The 32-year-old McCutchen was hitting .256 with 10 home runs, 29 RBIs and an NL-high 43 walks.

SEC, Big Ten to share bowl in new stadium

The Big Ten and SEC will soon be heading to the Las Vegas Bowl, taking turns facing the Pac-12 when the game moves into a new billion-dollar NFL stadium in 2020.

The Big Ten, Southeastern Conference and Big 12 unveiled bowl lineups for the 2020-25 seasons Tuesday. Other FBS conferences are expected to release their future bowl agreements over the next several weeks.

The Big Ten has six-year agreements with 11 bowls , including new deals with Las Vegas and the Belk Bowl in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Big Ten will alternate with the SEC in Las Vegas — the expected new home of the Oakland Raiders — and in Charlotte, with the Big Ten taking odd-numbered years in Las Vegas and even-numbered years in Charlotte.

Big Ten taps Warren as new commissioner

ROSEMONT, Ill.

The Big Ten hired Minnesota Vikings executive Kevin Warren as its new commissioner Tuesday, bringing on a former college basketball player and sports agent with a law degree from Notre Dame to replace Jim Delany and become the first black commissioner of a Power Five conference.

Warren, 55, has been the chief operating officer for the Vikings since 2015, the first African-American to hold that position for an NFL franchise.

He will start Sept. 16 and work alongside Delany, who will step down Jan. 1 from the job he has held since 1989.
