1812: The U.S. House of Representatives approves, 79-49, a declaration of war against Britain.

1919: Congress approves the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, guaranteeing citizens the right to vote regardless of their gender, and sends it to the states for ratification.

1942: The World War II Battle of Midway begins, resulting in a decisive American victory against Japan and marking the turning point of the war in the Pacific.

1954: French Premier Joseph Laniel and Vietnamese Premier Buu Loc sign treaties in Paris according “complete independence” to Vietnam.

1990: Dr. Jack Kevorkian carries out his first publicly assisted suicide, helping Janet Adkins, a 54-year-old Alzheimer’s patient from Portland, Ore., end her life in Oakland County, Mich.

1998: A federal judge sentences Terry Nichols to life in prison for his role in the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City.

1994: Mayor Patrick Ungaro says a decision should be made within a month on what to do with the decaying Higbee Building, which has been vacant since the company closed its downtown Youngstown store in 1982.

ComputerEasy International Inc. of Tempe, Ariz., is buying Forte Inc. of Youngstown, which employs 125 people producing doors, windows and security screens.

Youngstown city officials say they may have to remove a stone tablet of the Ten Commandments from City Hall to comply with a Supreme Court ruling, but they really don’t see that it is causing any harm.

1979: Defense Atty. Donald Leone objects to television cameras, recording equipment and any photographers in the Mahoning County courtroom where his client, Clyde Neeley, is being tried for murder and kidnapping in the death of Joseph DeLisio on June 16, 1977.

Police believe Elaine Poullas, 20, of Campbell was abducted from the Uptown area and murdered in Mill Creek Park, where her body was found by a Youngstown policeman on routine patrol.

East Palestine’s Jerry McGee wins the Kemper Open at Charlotte, N.C., finishing with a 16-under-par that allowed him to edge out Jerry Pate for the winner’s purse of $63,000.

1969: Spec. 4 Patrick M. Hagerty, 19, of Youngstown is reported killed during combat operations in South Vietnam.

Some of the obsolete textbooks in the Youngstown Public School system will be replaced by September. The new texts are to be adopted for a period not less than four years.

Three year-old Mary R. Johnson is crushed to death by a milk truck while riding her tricycle in the driveway of the family home on W. Hill Drive, Canfield Township.
