Ohio State baseball ousts McNeese in 13
NASHVILLE, Tenn.
Ridge Winand singled in the winning run in the 13th inning, and Ohio State eliminated McNeese 9-8 Saturday in the Nashville regional of the NCAA Tournament.
The Buckeyes (36-26) will play Vanderbilt, the No. 2 overall seed, today at 3 p.m.
Reliever Andrew Magno (5-3) struck out six of the final seven batters and finished with a career-high 12 strikeouts in 7 1/3 innings.
McNeese led 8-5 through seven. Shane Selman had three RBI and Jake Dickerson two for McNeese.
Ohio State tied it up scoring three in the eighth. Nick Erwin and Matt Carpenter each had RBI singles. With the bases loaded, Brady Cherry drew a walk tying it up at 8.
Newgarden wins first of two Detroit races
DETROIT
Josef Newgarden won the first of two Detroit Grand Prix races on a rain-slicked course Saturday to take the IndyCar points lead.
The Team Penske driver with a Chevrolet-powered car finished nearly a second in front of Alexander Rossi, who also was the runner-up at the Indianapolis 500. Newgarden opened the year with a victory at St. Petersburg and joined Indy 500 champion Simon Pagenaud as the series’ two-time winners this season. Newgarden has won 12 IndyCar races since 2015.
Takuma Sato finished third on Belle Isle, followed by rookie Felix Rosenqvist and Ryan Hunter-Reay, who closed strong after spinning out and dropping to 15th early in the race. Pagenaud, who entered the race leading the series in points, was sixth after starting 13th in the 22-car field on Belle Isle.
Custer wins Xfinity race in overtime
LONG POND, Pa.
Cole Custer slipped past Tyler Reddick in the final turn and held in to win the Xfinty Series race in overtime at Pocono Raceway.
Custer won his third race of the season in the No. 00 Ford for Stewart-Haas Racing. Reddick used a sweeping move on the inside and pulled away off the restart in the overtime and had the checkered flag in sight. Reddick drifted up the track headed into the frontstretch and Custer caught him and held on to nip him at the finish line for the thrilling victory.
The 21-year-old Custer sprayed a can of beer that was placed on the roof of his car and added this checkered flag to his wins this season at Fontana and Richmond. He scored his fifth win in 83 career starts in NASCAR’s second-tier series.
Chase Briscoe finished third to cap a successful day for SHR. Ryan Preece was fourth and Christopher Bell fifth.
Jets interview Saints exec for GM opening
NEW YORK
The New York Jets have completed their interview with New Orleans Saints executive Terry Fontenot for their general manager job.
The 38-year-old Fontenot is the Saints’ director of pro scouting. He has worked with New Orleans for 16 years, including the last six in his current role.
Fontenot is the second candidate the team has met with since Jets chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson fired Mike Maccagnan on May 15. The team interviewed Seattle Seahawks co-director of player personnel Scott Fitterer on Friday.
Castellanos lifts NYCFC to 2-2 draw with Crew
COLUMBUS
Valentin Castellanos scored the tying goal with a 35-yard shot in the 76th minute and New York City FC held on for a 2-2 draw with the Columbus Crew on Saturday night.
NYCFC (4-1-8) extended its unbeaten streak to an MLS-best nine games while the Crew snapped a three-game losing streak.
Gyasi Zardes opened the scoring for Columbus (5-9-2) with a penalty kick in the 28th minute.
Heber Araujo dos Santos pounced on a deflection off teammate Maxi Moralez to tie it at 1-all for NYCFC in the 57th minute.
Columbus retook the lead four minutes later. Pedro Santos finished David Accam’s cross into the left corner.
