AMERICAN LEAGUE

Rays 6, Red Sox 5

BOSTON

Avisail Garcia homered and added the go-ahead, two-run double in the sixth inning to rescue manager Kevin Cash from an untimely pitching change, and the Tampa Bay Rays held back the charging Red Sox. Travis d’Arnaud and Garcia homered to give the Rays a 4-3 lead in the fifth and help chase David Price. But Cash came out to get Charlie Morton with one on and two out in the bottom half; the AL ERA leader, who had only thrown 85 pitches, tried to talk his manager out of it, with no luck. Andrew Benintendi hit the next pitch from reliever Adam Kolarek over the Green Monster to give Boston the lead. But Garcia made it 6-5 with a wall-scraping double in the sixth, and Kolarek (4-3) followed with a perfect sixth.

Mariners 8, Rangers 5

ARLINGTON, TEXAS

Kyle Seager had a solo homer, a tiebreaking two-run triple and drove in four runs as the Seattle Mariners stretched their winning streak to six games. Domingo Santana hit his 21st homer for the Mariners (47-63). Sam Tuivailala (1-0) pitched 11/3 scoreless innings in relief of starter Mike Leake, who allowed 10 hits and five runs in 52/3 innings. Roenis Elias worked the ninth for his 14th save in 16 chances.

Blue Jays 9, Royals 2

KANSAS CITY, MO.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit a grand slam in the ninth inning to give him a career-high five RBIs, Sean Reid-Foley tossed five innings of four-hit ball, and the Toronto Blue Jays pounded the Kansas City Royals. Freddy Galvis drove in a pair of runs with a broken-bat single, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also had an RBI for the Blue Jays, who clinched their first winning series at Kauffman Stadium since April 2013. Meanwhile, the Royals stranded 14 while going 2 for 14 with runners in scoring position.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Phillies 4, Giants 2

PHILADELPHIA

Drew Smyly tossed seven shutout innings and Rhys Hoskins homered to lead the Philadelphia Phillies. The Giants had won 12 of 15 and 19 of 24 to jump back into the playoff picture, but couldn’t solve Smyly (2-5) in his second start for the Phillies. Smyly scattered four hits, struck out five and was never in any serious trouble. He should have stuck around at least another inning. Nick Pivetta continued to struggle in relief and allowed pinch-hit homers to Brandon Belt and Stephen Vogt in the eighth to make it 4-2. Hector Neris worked a scoreless ninth for his 19th save.

Braves 11 Nationals 8

WASHINGTON

Adam Duvall had two home runs and four hits, Josh Donaldson added a three-run homer and the Atlanta Braves beat Washington. Julio Teheran (6-7) allowed two runs and seven hits in 62/3 innings for Atlanta, which burst to an 11-1 lead and held on to split the first two games of the three-game series.

Cardinals 2, Cubs 1

ST. LOUIS

Paul Goldschmidt homered for the seventh time in eight games, a go-ahead drive off Yu Darvish in the sixth inning that lifted the St. Louis Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs. Goldschmidt hit a fastball from Darvish (3-5) to center for his 25th home run this season. Goldschmidt is hitting .364 (12 for 33) in his last eight games with 14 RBIs.

INTERLEAGUE

Orioles 8, Padres 5

SAN DIEGO

Chris Davis hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning to snap an 0-for-18 slump, and the Baltimore Orioles rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the San Diego Padres. Davis connected off Matt Strahm (4-8) with one out in the eighth for just his eighth home run this season. Baltimore added on with a two-run single by Trey Mancini off Michel Baez, saddling Strahm with five runs in 12/3 innings. Strahm allowed five hits while striking out four and walking one. Miguel Castro (1-1) pitched the seventh for the win, and Shawn Armstrong got six outs for his third save.

Twins 2, Marlins 1

MIAMI

Byron Buxton homered and Jake Odorizzi followed his worst big league start by pitching one-run ball into the sixth inning as the Minnesota Twins beat the Miami Marlins. Odorizzi (12-5) allowed a run and four hits in 52/3 innings. He struck out five and was lifted after giving up his only walk to Neil Walker with two out in the sixth. Taylor Rogers retired the three batters he faced in the ninth for his 16th save.

Diamondbacks 4, Yankees 2

NEW YORK

Diamondbacks rookie Taylor Clarke was an impressive winner in his Yankee Stadium debut and Arizona got home runs from Christian Walker and Carson Kelly to beat New York. Nick Ahmed hit an RBI single and Adam Jones had an early sacrifice fly for the Diamondbacks (54-54).
