Canfield-Poland romps in World Series opener

KIRkLAND, WASH.

Emily Denney, Alaina Scavina and Mary Brant each had three hits as the Canfield-Poland Junior League Softball team opened the World Series with Sunday’s 11-0, five-inning victory over Canada.

Winning pitcher Mia Opalick tossed four shutout innings, striking out seven. She drove in two runs as did Brant and Denney.

Today, Canfield-Poland continues pool play with a 4:30 p.m. game against the Southeast Regional winner.

Canfield baseball team blanks New Albany

JEFFERSON

The Canfield 8-10 Little League baseball team defeated New Albany 6-0 on Sunday in the state tournament.

Ryan Weibling and Will Murphy led Canfield’s 10-hit attack with two apiece. Weibling, Logan Patellis and Murphy combined on a three-hit shutout with eight strikeouts.

Tuesday at 7:30 p.m., Canfield will play today’s Jefferson/Lebanon winner.

Howland softball team falls in state tourney

WHEELERSBURG

The Howland Little League 9-10 softball team lost to Symmes Valley, 1-0, on Sunday in the state tournament. Today at 1 p.m., Howland will play Portsmouth.

Symmes Valley advances in the winner’s bracket to play Canfield on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Doubledays rout Scrappers, 10-5

AUBURN, N.Y.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers rallied for four runs in the ninth inning but it was far from enough in a 10-5 loss Sunday to the Auburn Doubledays.

Pedor Alfonseca hit a three-run homer while Brayan Rocchio had two hits for the Scrappers (22-21).

Jhonneyver Gutierrez (2-5) took the loss, giving up seven runs on seven hits in two innings.

Dave Blaney wins at Sharon Speedway

Hartford

Retired NASCAR driver Dave Blaney was among the winners at Sharon Speedway on Sunday.

Joining him in victory lane were Chris Schneider (stock cars), Dustin Demattia (econo mods), Kole Holden (econo mods), Amelia Clay (RUSH mods) and Randy White and Sam Darby (junior sprints).

Blaney charged from the eighth starting spot and emerged victorious from a thrilling three-car battle for the lead over the first 15 laps with Dan Shetler and Chad Kemenah.

King captures 15th win at Mercer

Mercer, Pa.

Rex King, Sr. was among the winners Saturday at Michaels Mercer Raceway. It was his 15th career win at the track.

Other winners were Kyle Colwell, Garrett Krummert. Vivian Jones and Bill Fuchs.

Koepka cruises to St. Jude victory

MEMPHIS, Tenn.

Brooks Koepka had three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the front nine and cruised to a three-stroke victory in the FedEx St. Jude Invitational on Sunday for his first World Golf Championships title.

Playing with Rory McIlroy in their first final-group pairing, the top-ranked Koepka closed with a bogey-free 5-under 65 at TPC Southwind for his seventh PGA Tour title. He finished at 16-under 264.

McIlroy followed his third-round 62 with a 71 to drop into a tie for fourth at 11 under.

Webb Simpson had a 64 to finish second. Marc Leishman (67) was third, four strokes back. Tommy Fleetwood (66) and Matthew Fitzpatrick (69) joined McIlroy at 11 under.

After tapping in for par on No. 18, Koepka celebrated with a little fist pump before hugging McIlroy. Koepka had been so close in recent weeks, coming in second at the U.S. Open in June and tying for fourth at the British Open.

He also had a pair of top-10 finishes in this event when it was held at Firestone Country Club in Akron.
