Canfield 10-U team opens state with win

JEFFERSON

The Canfield 10-U Little League team rolled to an 11-1 victory over Washington Court House in its opening game in the state tournament Saturday at the Havens Baseball Complex.

Gio Altomare led Canfield’s 14-hit attack with three hits and Jake Dovich, Joey Pannunzio and Logan Patellis each had two.

Matthew Campbell led Canfield with two RBIs.

Pitchers Will Murphy, Tyce Bair and Danny Chaplow combined on a one-hitter with nine strikeouts.

Canfield will play New Albany today at noon.

Boardman 11-U team wins game at state

CAMBRIDGE

Boardman’s 11-U Little League baseball team overcame an early three-run deficit for Saturday’s 6-4 victory over Washington Court House in the opening game of the state tournament.

Relief pitcher Anthony Groner pitched four innings of four-hit ball to earn the victory.

At the plate, Groner had two hits and drove in four runs. Ryan Smith had two hits while Gabe Hammerton and Vincent Butto each had one.

Boardman’s next game will be Tuesday against the winner of New Albany and Bellevue.

Canfield, Howland teams win at state

WHEELERSBURG

The Canfield 10-U Little League softball team won its first two games in the state tournament on Saturday.

Canfield beat Portsmouth in the first game 7-2 and then took care of Tallmadge 10-0 in the second game.

Canfield’s next game will be at 6 p.m. Monday against the winner of a game at 10 a.m. today between Howland and Symmes Valley.

Howland advanced with a 9-3 victory over Payo.

If Howland loses, it will face Portsmouth at 1 p.m. today.
