Scrappers outlast Doubledays in extras

It took a little longer than expected, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers topped the Auburn Doubledays in a three-game series opener.

The Scrappers won 5-3 in 13 innings after scoring two in the top half. Brayan Rocchio knocked in Kory Holland and Yainer Diaz singled home Bryan Lavastida.

Lavastida opened the scoring for the Scrappers (21-20) with an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning.

The Doubledays tied the game in the eighth. Jeremy Ydens doubled to left field and Caldioli Sanfler’s RBI single.

Ray Delgado hit a sacrifice fly in the 11th and Billy Wilson singled home a run in the 12th.

Sanfler and Eric Senior doubled home runs in extras for the Doubledays.

Andrew Misiaszek (1-1) allowed Auburn’s extra-inning runs. Jose Oca pitched a perfect bottom of the 13th for his first save of the year.

Alfonso Hernandez (3-1) gave up four runs in five innings for Auburn (16-24).

The Scrappers and Doubledays will play the second game of the weekend series today. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
