Boardman Park hosted it’s first disc golf summer camp, starting on June 24.

Justin Edwards with the Mahoning Valley Disc Golf Association coached the day camp for children older than 10-years-old.

“It’s the perfect way to introduce children into the game,” said Karen McCallum, the recreation director at the park.

Seven teenagers signed up for the camp, that focused on the fundamentals of the game.

The group met for three hours a day, starting with warm ups before working in groups to play.

Edwards taught the group proper throwing techniques, how to break into different groups to play and how to combat different holes.

“Just like any game, you have to learn the fundamentals before you can get good at it,” Edwards said.

The group played on the Boardman Park’s new disc golf course.

McCallum said that the course was starting to be built three years ago, and was finished last year.

Along with the camp, the park will also host The Green Oasis Open Disc Golf Tournament on Aug. 10.
