Library to host class on online payments

SALEM

Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will host a class concerning the safety of online payment systems at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Quaker Room. Technology instructor Stephanie Peterson will explain what to look for when choosing an online payment system and she will address questions and concerns. Seating is limited and registration is required. Register online at www.salem.lib.oh.us or call the library for assistance at 330-332-0042. This class is open to the public and free to attend. The class is provided through a Guiding Ohio Online grant made by the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the State Library of Ohio.

Yard sales planned

NORTH JACKSON

More than 150 community-wide yard sales will take place at 9 a.m. Aug. 2 and 3. The community is pulling together and holding sales at homes and businesses. Most are listed on a map that will be provided. There will be a field of vendors at 10748 Mahoning Ave. for those seeking a more central location. Maps will be there as well as at restaurants and businesses entering the township. For information or vendor spots, call Gary at 330-727-5449. This effort is sponsored by Jackson Township Citizens Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Funds raised will be used to purchase and place live wreaths on more than 300 veterans’ graves in Jackson Township Cemetery in December.

Library will host writing program

The McKinley Memorial Library, 40 S. Main St., will host a Creative Writing Workshop: Brainstorming 101 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. Aug. 3. Lisa Didiano, owner of the Paperback Shack, will present the workshop. Anyone who wished to attend can bring a notebook and pen or use the free materials provided. Clovernook Center hosts Ohio students

CINCINNATI

Clovernook Center for the Blind & Visually Impaired in Cincinnati, in collaboration with the Braille Institute of America, recently hosted Ohio students of all ages and abilities for the Ohio Regional Braille Challenge.

Students in grades 1-12, including Youngstown native, Aujanee Bland, competed in a series of five skills contests demonstrating braille reading and comprehension, speed and accuracy, spelling, proofreading and tactile graphics. Aujanee Bland won third place in the seventh- through ninth-grade competition.

Society to host open house

POLAND

The Poland Historical Society will host an open house of the Little Red Schoolhouse, 4515 Center Road, from 1 to 3 p.m. Aug. 11. Society members will be available to answer questions.
