Cloverbud Day Camp 2019

Cloverbud Day Camp, a camp for energetic children between the ages of 5-8 years-old, will take place on Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. This jungle themed camp will have STEM activities, arts and crafts, and games to play throughout the day. Each camper will have a full day of activities and will get to bring their crafts home. Cloverbud Day Camp will take place at the Canfield Fairgrounds, Greenford Ruritans Building, located at 7265 Columbiana Canfield Road in Canfield. Registration for day camp is $10. Mill Creek ABWA to have Aug. 13 meeting

The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Aug. 13 meeting at A La Cart Catering in Canfield beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu will include hot dogs, hamburgers, potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, tossed salad, fresh fruit, Jell-O, dessert, coffee and tea. The cost is $15 and reservations may be made by calling Marilyn Abramski at 330-726-2527 or Darlene Demjen at 330-755-9089 by July 31. The speaker for the evening will be Kelly Kotel, who is the Adult Program Specialist with the library. The scholarship recipients will also be present at this August meeting. The public is welcome.

Local music combo to play in the park

On Aug. 5, the Jim Frank Combo will perform in Canfield on the green beginning at 7 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public. The band will play a variety of songs and also take requests. In case of rain, the venue will be at the First Methodist church across from the gazebo.

Hopewell Theatre hopes to raise funds with fun

Hopewell Theatre’s 2019–2020 season kickoff “Fun” Raiser, an evening of food, fun, and prizes, will take place on Aug. 25 from 6-9 p.m. at A La Cart Catering, 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield. Tickets cost $30 and include a full dinner buffet, dessert, cash wine bar, entertainment and silent auction prizes. Local favorites Glenn Stevens and Regina Reynolds will emcee a terrific entertainment lineup - Just Friends Community Chorus will perform favorite hits of the 1950s, Tom Gent and Maureen Gorman Stenglein will sing classic show tunes, and stand-up comedian Jenna Cintavey and improvisational comedy troupe The Dinner Theatre Rejects will bring the laughs. Retiree group to have Aug. 6 meeting

Public Employee Retirees, P.E.R.I Chapter 18, will meet on Aug. 6 at 12 p.m. at the Avion Banquet Center, located at 2177 Western Reserve Road. Lunch will be served at noon for a cost of $13. There will be a 50/50 raffle. A social worker for elder abuse from the Adult Protective Services of Mahoning County will be the guest speaker. Information and updates with proposed changes from the State to the O.P.E.R.S. health/pension benefits will be discussed. Retirees and public employees under O.P.E.R.S. are invited to attend. The schedule for upcoming meetings/luncheons for 2019 will be Oct. 1 and Dec. 3 at 12 p.m. at the Avion Banquet Center. During the meetings throughout the year, the P.E.R.I. officers will continue to provide information to the members with our O.P.E.R.S health and pension benefits updates, and various guest speakers. They welcome O.P.E.R.S. retirees and employees to join Chapter 18 for a $10 yearly membership fee, which can be paid at the meetings. Spouses can join as associate members for $5 yearly fee.

Healing and wellness mini course offered

On July 31, Soma Essential Healing & Wellness, a Youngstown-based wellness company, in collaboration with Dr. Andria D’Amato, practitioner/owner of the Red Lotus Holistic Center in Canfield, will offer a 2.5 hour Ecology of Wellness mini course. Finding records in FamilySearch.org

FamilySearch is an incredible research tool, with records from all U.S. states and many countries around the world. Use of this resource requires free registration, whereby each researcher sets up their own account. FamilySearch has a wiki that serves as on online genealogy encyclopedia, offering articles and audiovisual tutorials. Did you know that this resource provides free death certificates for Ohio deaths occurring 1908-1953? On Aug. 20 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library, Tim Seman will demonstrate best practices for using this amazing database, including how to set-up your free account. Microsoft Excel class 2

Join the Canfield library on Aug. 16 at 10 a.m. for Intermediate Microsoft Excel. This class will review the basics of Excel, cover how to format your page layout, and work on some basic formulas. The next meetings of the monthly book club of titles chosen “Off the Shelves” of the Canfield library’s book club room will take place on Aug. 27 at 6:30 p.m. and Aug. 29 at 11 a.m. They will discuss “Virgil Wander” by Leif Enger. The September title will be “Where the Crawdads Sing” by Delia Owens. This event is for adults.

True Stories book club

True Stories is the book club for people who want to read about some of the world’s most captivating real-life people and events. Thrilling tales

Join the Canfield library on Aug. 22 at 6 p.m. for Thrilling Tales, an evening story time for adults, which features exciting short stories that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Pay as you attend for this chair yoga class at the Canfield library every Friday in August at 10 a.m. Class is $10 per session.

Bonding with babies and books

This event, which will take place every Thursday in August at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Canfield library every Tuesday in August at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.

Before-school-begins bash

Celebrate the fun you had over the summer and the start of a new school year on Aug. 5 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. They will have games, crafts and more fun. Snacks will be provided. This event is for children of all ages.

This event, which will take place on Aug. 7 and 21 at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join in for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs on Aug. 3 at 2:30 p.m. and Aug. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Tales to tails

Read to our favorite therapy dogs on Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Canfield library. This helps develop reading skills, promotes confidence and encourages a love of reading. Bring a book of your choice or the librarians will find one for you. This event is for children in grades K and up. Therapy dogs provided by Pet Partners of Greater Youngstown, a local Pet Therapy group. This event is for school-age children.

An afternoon in the viking age

When people hear the word “viking,” very specific images come to mind. When these diverse groups of people went a-viking (adventuring) there was much more involved than horned helmets, long beards and pillaging. Spend some time learning the history and culture of an interesting people at the Austintown library on Aug. 17 at 3:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. Get fit every Monday morning in August at 9:30 a.m. and join a librarian for a 20-30 minute walk along the Canfield library walking path and nearby neighborhood. Make new friends and join the fun. In the event of rain, they will walk inside the meeting room. This event is for adults and teens.

Learn to line dance

Line dancing is a fun, exciting way to dance your way to good health. This class, which will take place on Aug. 8 and 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library, will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines and will help you burn calories at the same time. Participation is limited to one session per person each month to accommodate demand, registration required. Botanical sun prints

Embody the spirit of summer and design a cheery botanical sun print on Aug. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library. This neat scientific process creates unique and timeless pieces which can be used as cards, wall art or whatever you choose. Supplies are limited, registration is required. Family movie

Join the Canfield library on Aug. 24 at 2:30 p.m. for a Saturday Movie Matinee. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie. Children age 7 years and younger must be with an adult.

Sit ‘n’ stitch

Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library on Aug. 7 and 21 at 11 a.m. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (Unfinished Objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting or crochet projects, and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event is for adults.

Movie night

Join the Canfield library on Aug. 1 at 6 p.m. for a movie night where they will be watching a newly released DVD. Feel free to bring your own small snacks and drinks. This event is for adults and teens. Children under the age of 7 must be accompanied by an adult. The movie will be PG or PG 13.

Blood drive

YMCA hosts Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.

The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its fifth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. is facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions. Camp will take place Aug. 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day at the Central YMCA in Youngstown. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand the number of campers that can attend and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer financial-based scholarships. Camp costs $150 per student per week and financial scholarships are available. Registration forms are available for download at AutismMV.org/campfriend and can be mailed by request by emailing ASMV at camp@autismmv.org. The Autism Society is still welcoming volunteers, interns and neurotypical peers to assist. Donations from individuals and business sponsorships are currently being accepted to help defer additional costs.

Gamblers Anonymous Meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Ursuline Education and Wellness Center announces guided labyrinth walks

The Ursuline Education and Wellness Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, recently began its 2019 Guided Labyrinth Walk season. This year’s themes celebrate aspects of compassion, a virtue central to the ministry of St. Angela Merici, who founded the Ursuline order in 1535. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free, weather-permitting events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. The themes by date are Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. - “How should we speak to one another;” Sept. 12 at 6:30 p.m. - “Knowledge, recognition and action” and Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. - “Love your enemies.” A presentation on the history of labyrinths precedes this walk. The labyrinth is open year-round from dawn to dusk for all persons of faith. There is no cost to use the labyrinth, which is accessible for different physical abilities and offers ample parking. Printed guides are provided at the labyrinth’s entrance giving suggestions for following the path, but there is no right or wrong way to experience the sacred walk. Volunteers needed for fine arts show

A juried fine arts show is being planned for August in Canfield and organizers are looking for additional help. Arts on the Commons is planned for Aug. 3-10. The committee is searching for enthusiastic, organized individuals, whether or not they have a background in fine arts. Arts on the Commons will be soliciting nationally for entrants for the show. Dr. Lou Zona, director of the Butler Institute of American Art, has agreed to be the juror and Nils Johnson has pledged the initial funds for prizes through the Johnson Foundation. Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 4:30 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa. This location is handicapped accessible. On Mondays, a meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Girard Multigenerational Center, located at 443 Trumbull Avenue in Girard.
