Boardman Park hosted their first Preschoolers in the Park event for this year July 16.

Anne-Marie Turner with the park said that the program got started just last year.

“This event just like every event is about wanting to bring the family together for a fun day at the park,” Turner said.

The theme of this event was All the Little Birds.

During the event children gathered outside of the Maag Outdoor Theatre to listen to stories, sing along to songs, and learn about birds.

Peggy Flynn with the Green team and Gina Kairys with Challenge Island were present at the event. Flynn worked with children to make all natural bird feeders from pinecones during the event.

“It’s a fun way to get little kids involved and have them start thinking about the environment,” Flynn said.

Kairys is the owner of Challenge Island which she said focus’ on teaching young children about STEAM education.

During the event children could go to the Challenge Island table where they could color photos of birds and learn about their habitats.

Turner also read stories to the children gathered, with the library providing snacks and drinks for the group as they listened.

“We want to instill an early importance of literacy and have preschoolers interact with their peers,” Turner said.

The next event will be hosted by the park August 13 with the theme of Kindness Counts.

Turner said that children and their families will be asked to bring one item to donate to children in need if they attend.

“It will be all about being kind and helping others and we thought that would be a great way to show that,” Turner said.
