YSU bowlers perform well at junior tourney

Youngstown

Youngstown State’s three bowlers competing at the 2019 Junior Gold Championships last week each put forth solid performances in one of the summer’s biggest tournaments.

In a field of 440 at the start of the week, Emma Dockery, Sarah Florence and Emma Wrenn each qualified for the Advancers Round of 63 for their pinfalls through 16 games.

Dockery qualified 11th in the Final Advancers Round of 32, and the junior claimed the 16th and final spot in Match Play. She dropped her two matches in the double-elimination bracket on Friday evening, which resulted in a four-way tie for 12th at the tournament.

Dockery led the field after the first day with a four-game total of 898, which was capped by her tournament-high game of 263. She shot an 818 over four games on Thursday in the final round of qualifying, and she averaged an impressive 196.2 over five games in the Advancers Round. Dockery averaged 180.6 over her five games in the Final Advancers Round and claimed the last spot in match play by one pin.

Florence finished 35th in the field and was 13 pins away from joining Dockery in the Final Advancers Round of 32. Wrenn placed 42nd overall and posted a high game of 258.

YSU women boast another top-10 GPA

Youngstown

For the third time in the last four years, the Youngstown State women’s basketball program posted one of the top 10 grade-point averages in the country.

The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association announced its Academic Top 25 Honor Roll on Tuesday, and YSU’s 3.668 GPA during the 2018-19 season was the seventh-best mark out of 351 Division I programs.

This marks the eighth time in the last nine seasons that the Penguins have appeared on the WBCA Academic Top 25 Honor Roll. YSU and DePaul are the only two schools in the country that have been on the list eight times since the 2010-11 academic year.

YSU was one of three Horizon League programs to appear in the Academic Top 25, joining eighth-ranked Green Bay and 19th-ranked IUPUI. YSU is the only team from Ohio on the prestigious list.

Individually, seven of the 13 student-athletes on the team registered a 4.0 during at least one semester during the past academic year. Mary Dunn, Madison Mallory and Melinda Trimmer had perfect 4.0 marks in both semesters. In the fall, Sarah Cash and Chelsea Olson boasted a 4.0, and McKenah Peters and Emma VanZanten joined the perfect ranks in the spring.

Former golf coach cited for sexual harassment

ARLINGTON, Texas

A University of Texas at Arlington report says former golf coach Stuart Deane was found responsible for sexual harassment through inappropriate comments to some of his female athletes.

Deane resigned as the university’s golf director before the investigation was completed in October, according to documents obtained by the school newspaper, The Shorthorn. He was placed on administrative leave last August, a day after a former player emailed the university president detailing some allegations.
