Vargas leads Scrappers to shutout victory

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers completed a three-hit shutout to beat the Williamsport Crosscutters 7-0 on Friday night.

The win was the Scrappers’ fifth shutout of the season — all in July.

Scrappers starter Carlos Vargas had a no-hitter going into the top of the fifth. But Logan O’Hoppe doubled to left field to start the inning.

Johan Rojas doubled in the and Corbin Williams singled to round out the hits for the Crosscutters (9-24).

Vargas (2-2) allowed two hits and a walk, striking out six in six innings pitched.

Tyler Burch (1-1) gave up two runs on two hits and two walks. He only lasted two-thirds of an inning.

George Valera hit his seventh home run of the season in the first. After a walk from Bryan Lavastida to start the game, Valera cleared the left-center field wall for a 2-0 lead.

Michael Cooper walked and Billy Wilson hit his first homer of the season over the right-field fence in the sixth.

Lavastida hit a two-out, bases-loaded double to center, clearing the bases in the eighth.

The Scrappers (17-17) will travel to Batavia to begin a three-game series with the Muckdogs. Today’s game is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.

Roster Moves

Left-handed pitcher Jake Miednik and catcher Eric Rodriguez were assigned to Lake County on Friday.

Catcher Yainer Diaz was assigned to Mahoning Valley from the Arizona League.

Miednik pitched 21/3 scoreless innings in three games for the Scrappers. Rodriguez batted .140 (6 for 43) with three RBIs in 14 games.

Diaz hit .451 (37 for 82) with five home runs and 22 RBIs in Arizona.
