Curbstone to begin luncheons on Sept. 9

BEAVER TOWNSHIP

The Curbstone Coaches will resume their luncheons on Sept. 9 at Avion Banquet Center.

Luncheons will be offered each Monday through May 18 except for Dec. 30.

The luncheons are open to the public. There is a buffet luncheon followed by a sports related speaker.

Applications are being accepted for nominations for the 2020 Hall Of Fame Class that will be inducted on May 3. Deadline is Nov. 16. For an application to nominate call 330-506-6774.

Bowling Association meets July 30

STRUTHERS

The Greater Youngstown Bowling Association is holding it’s annual meeting on July 30 at 7 p.m. at Holiday Bowl.

All sanction bowlers are asked to attend. Election of sergeant-at-arms and directors will take place.

YSU golfers earn academic honors

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State men’s golf team has received President’s Special Recognition for posting a team GPA of 3.5 or better.

YSU is one of 19 Division I programs to be honored, according to the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Other Horizon League teams honored were Detroit Mercy, Green Bay, IUPUI and Oakland.

To qualify, teams must post a grade point average of 3.00 or higher using the GPA of each golfer on the team’s official squad list for the academic year.

YSU posted a 3.52 cumulative GPA for the 2018-19 academic year, which was the highest of any men’s program at Youngstown State.

YSU bowling program inks Ebonite deal

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State bowling program has signed a sponsorship agreement with Ebonite International, giving the Penguins access to the bowling balls and equipment under the Columbia 300, Ebonite, Hammer and Track brands.

YSU will represent Columbia 300 as part of the agreement.

Based out of Hopkinsville, Ky., Ebonite International has a consumer brand portfolio consisting of Columbia 300, Ebonite, Hammer, Powerhouse, Robby’s and Track.

Big Block Modifieds to compete in Mercer

Mercer, Pa.

The Big Block Modifieds will return to Michaels Mercer Raceway on Saturday.

The competitors for the Diehl Ram championship will take on the stars of the BRP Modified Tour in a 35-lap contest that will score points for both the track and the series titles.

Fireworks will follow the racing.

Pit gates will open at 4 p.m. and spectator gates will open an hour later. Practice sessions will be held at 6:30. The first heat race of the night will go to the post at 7 p.m.

Admission prices are $15 for adults and $13 for seniors (60 and older). Children 13 and younger are admitted free.

Pit passes will be available for $35 for adults and $30 for seniors and children 10 and younger.

Michaels Mercer Raceway is a 3/8-mile dirt track located minutes from Interstates 79 and 80 just off Route 19 on Fairground Road in Mercer, Pa.

UNLV assistant waiting for heart transplant

LAS VEGAS

UNLV offensive coordinator Barney Cotton is awaiting a heart transplant and will not coach on the field this season.

Rebels coach Tony Sanchez says in a news release issued Thursday by the school that the 62-year-old Cotton is in Omaha, Neb., and on a waiting list to receive a heart. Cotton is an Omaha native and former University of Nebraska assistant coach. He served as interim head coach for the Cornhuskers in 2014 after Bo Pelini was fired.
