Blood drive

Retiree group to have Aug. 6 meeting
Public Employee Retirees, P.E.R.I Chapter 18, will meet on Aug. 6 at 12 p.m. at the Avion Banquet Center, located at 2177 Western Reserve Road. Lunch will be served at noon for a cost of $13. There will be a 50/50 raffle. A social worker for elder abuse from the Adult Protective Services of Mahoning County will be the guest speaker. Information and updates with proposed changes from the State to the O.P.E.R.S. health/pension benefits will be discussed. Retirees and public employees under O.P.E.R.S. are invited to attend. The schedule for upcoming meetings/luncheons for 2019 will be Oct. 1 and Dec. 3 at 12 p.m. at the Avion Banquet Center. During the meetings throughout the year, the P.E.R.I. officers will continue to provide information to the members with our O.P.E.R.S health and pension benefits updates, and various guest speakers. They welcome O.P.E.R.S. retirees and employees to join Chapter 18 for a $10 yearly membership fee, which can be paid at the meetings. Spouses can join as associate members for $5 yearly fee.

Friends of PLYMC yoga class
Pay as you attend for this yoga class at the Poland library every Wednesday in August from 5-6 p.m. Class is $10 per session. Dress comfortably.
Mushroom guru - Walt Sturgeon
Mushroom guru and author Walt Sturgeon will present on the myriad colors, forms and habitats of our native macro fungi on Aug. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Edible and toxic species will be shown. Folklore and examples of bioluminescent species, insectivorous fungi and hallucinogenic mushrooms will also be presented. Sturgeon is a member and trustee of the Ohio Mushroom Society, which has been affiliated with the North American Mycological Association since 1982. This event is for adults.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, which will take place every Wednesday in August at 10 a.m. at the Poland library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Poland library on Aug. 15 at 10:30 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader.
Read to Roxie
Relax and read to Roxie, a registered therapy dog with GO TEAM Therapy Dogs at the Poland library on Aug. 20 at 6 p.m. Each child will be given a 15-minute reading session while spots remain. Call 330-744-8636 and ask for the Poland library to register. This event is for grades 4 and under.

Funky flowers with the Youngstown Chapter of the EGA
Join the Youngstown Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild on Aug. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at the Poland library to learn Tenerife embroidery. Tenerife is a fast and fun needle lace technique that is great for decorating just about anything including clothing. The project is worked on the stitcher’s choice of patterned fabric and includes a variety of pearl cottons to personalize your flowers. YMCA hosts Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.
The Autism Society of Mahoning Valley has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Kennedy Family Fund of The Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley to support its fifth annual Camp F.R.I.E.N.D.: Finding Rewards In Every New Day, an inclusive day camp experience for children, teens and young adult students with autism and their friends. The first program of its kind in the Mahoning Valley, Camp F.R.I.E.N.D. is facilitated by ABA Therapy Solutions. Camp will take place July 15-19 and Aug. 12-16 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. each day at the Central YMCA in Youngstown. The grant will help more families share in this fun, summer rite of passage by allowing the camp to expand the number of campers that can attend and enabling the Autism Society of Mahoning Valley to offer financial-based scholarships. Camp costs $150 per student per week and financial scholarships are available. Registration forms are available for download at AutismMV.org/campfriend and can be mailed by request by emailing ASMV at camp@autismmv.org. The Autism Society is still welcoming volunteers, interns and neurotypical peers to assist. Donations from individuals and business sponsorships are currently being accepted to help defer additional costs.
Yoga class
The Friends of PLYMC yoga class will take place every Wednesday in July from 5-6 p.m. at the Poland library. Pay as you attend. Class is $10 per session and meets every Wednesday. Dress comfortably.
Legends of Asgard
Local teenagers will gather to perform and celebrate the ancient myths of Norse culture at the Poland library on July 25 at 11 a.m. Learn how Odin became the god he is and how he met his mighty end. Celebrate with the library as these talented young people teach an interesting history lesson through a fantastic performance. This event is for school-age children.
Ladybug cross-stitch with Youngstown Chapter of the EGA
Join the Youngstown Chapter of the Embroiderer’s Guild of America on July 24 at 10 a.m. at the Poland library as they present an embroidery class for children. Libby - the one-tap reading app for ebooks
Learn more about the library’s new mobile app Libby (The One Tap Reading App powered by OverDrive) by attending a live demonstration on July 30 at 6 p.m. at the Poland library. Libby provides a simple, elegant user experience for current and new users alike, and makes it easy for you to access your loans and holds, navigate the catalog, and more. This event features two Overdrive Technical Support Specialists walking you through setting up and using Libby. Bring your device or phone and you can start downloading free books and audiobooks today. The presentation is an hour and will be followed by an open Q&A with the specialists. This event is for adults and teens.
Gamblers Anonymous Meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous may be able to help. Gamblers Anonymous meetings will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting is offered on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend.

Summer Discovery Program
Children can sign up online or at any Mahoning County public library on or after May 1, to register for this year’s Summer Discovery Program, A Universe of Stories. Summer Discovery runs from May 1 through July 31. Children can complete activities or read books to earn prizes (while supplies last) and to earn a chance to win a gift card. Children who sign up will receive a Dairy Queen coupon and Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher. Children who complete the program by July 24, will be invited to a breakfast event on Aug. 2, featuring author Laura Numeroff. Teens and adults can sign up online at LibraryVisit.org or in person and read 10 books to earn your choice of book. Read 15 books for a chance to win a $25 Amazon gift card. Participants will receive a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher just for signing up.
Historical society to host day trip
The Poland Historical Society will host a day trip to Pittsburgh on Sept. 18. The itinerary begins when the bus leaves from the Poland Methodist Church, located at 1940 Boardman-Poland Road, at 8:30 a.m., arriving in Pittsburgh at 10 a.m. and includes a visit to the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Garden, lunch at the Schenley Park Caf , followed by a tour of the Frick Art and Historical Center and the Clayton Mansion. The bus will leave Pittsburgh at 5 p.m. for the return trip to Poland. The cost of this fundraiser bus trip is $115 and includes the bus, admissions and lunch. Registration for the trip is due by Aug. 12, but early registration is recommended. Registration forms are available through the Poland Historical Society or can be emailed. Make check payable to the Poland Historical Society and mail to P.O. Box 5052, Poland, OH 44514. Include name, address, phone number and email. YWCA accepting entries for 37th annual Women’s Art Exhibition
YWCA Mahoning Valley is accepting entries for its 37th Annual Women Artists: A Celebration! Art Show to take place June 28 through July 26 at YWCA’s downtown Youngstown office, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. The art exhibition showcases work by local, regional and national women artists. The juried show features all media, including paintings, drawings, photographs, fiber art, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, videography and metal work. Returning for a second time is a juried show for young women ages 14-17 from Mahoning and Trumbull counties. The show will feature seventeen works selected by jurors from the YWCA Women Artists Committee and will run in conjunction with the Women Artists show. Two-dimensional work is eligible for the 17 Under 17 show. Entry forms for both shows are available at YWCA’s offices in Youngstown and Warren and on the YWCA’s website at ywcamahoningvalley.org/women-artists. Entries are due by April 8. Priscilla Roggenkamp, Associate Professor of Art at Ashland University, will serve as the juror for the 2019 show. A ticketed Preview Party will take place on June 28 from 6-9 p.m. at the YWCA. PSHS Class of 1969 to reunite on Aug. 3
The Poland High School Class of 1969 will host its 50th class reunion on Aug. 3 at the Reserve Run Golf Course’s Another Round Bar and Grille. Throughout the next few months, former classmates will meet to finalize plans for the evening event along with plans for additional get together activities on Aug. 2 and Aug. 4. The next meeting of the planning committee will take place at 6 p.m. on Feb. 13 at the Little Red Schoolhouse, located at 4515 Center Road in Poland Township. Classmates interested in helping with the reunion are invited to attend the meeting.
