Royals 6, White Sox 5

KANSAS CITY, MO.

Cheslor Cuthbert and Jorge Soler homered in a five-run third inning and the Kansas City Royals stayed hot, completing a four-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox with a win. Ian Kennedy gave up a run in the ninth, but earned his 16th save. Royals starter Brad Keller (6-9) battled through 61/3 innings, allowing just a couple of runs after the first inning. Keller gave up nine hits, struck out seven and walked two. White Sox starter Ross Detwiler (1-1) lasted just 21/3 innings, giving up five runs and eight hits.

Twins 6, Athletics 3

MINNEAPOLIS

Pinch-hitter Eddie Rosario drove a go-ahead, three-run homer on the first pitch from reliever Yusmeiro Petit in the seventh inning and the Minnesota Twins beat the Oakland Athletics. Mitch Garver and C.J. Cron each went deep in the eighth to pad the lead, and Taylor Rogers held the A’s down for two innings to record his 14th save. Despite seven strong innings by starter Kyle Gibson (9-4), the Twins trailed 3-1 entering the seventh against Mike Fiers. Fiers was pulled for Petit (2-2) and Rosario crushed the right-hander’s 90 mph fastball.

Yankees 6, Rays 2 Yankees 5, Rays 1

NEW YORK

Yankees manager Aaron Boone got fired up at rookie umpire Brennan Miller in a profane second-inning rant, and New York rallied past the Tampa Bay Rays in a doubleheader sweep. Luke Voit tied the score in the fifth with his first home run since June 14. After Domingo German gave up homers to the first two batters, Gio Urshela hit a tying home run in the second off Yonny Chirinos. German (12-2) allowed four hits in six innings. Gary Sanchez smashed a go-ahead single during a three-run fifth. Chirinos (9-5) gave up five runs — four earned — and nine hits in five innings. In the second game, Luis Cessa (1-1) allowed two hits in 31/3 scoreless innings. Morton allowed a season-high five runs in 52/3 innings.

Red Sox 5, Blue Jays 0

BOSTON

Chris Sale and two relievers combined on a two-hitter, and the Boston Red Sox left-hander struck out 12 in six innings in a victory over the Toronto Blue Jays. Sale (4-9) gave up both hits and walked two to earn his first victory in a month and his first at home since July 11, 2018 — a span of 14 starts. Rafael Devers hit a three-run homer off Thomas Pannone (2-4), who matched Sale into the fifth inning before giving up Sam Travis’ double and Sandy Leon’s RBI single. Pannone gave up four runs on five hits and three walks, striking out two.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Cardinals 7, Reds 4

CINCINNATI

Tommy Edman snapped a sixth-inning tie with his first career grand slam and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Cincinnati Reds for their fifth win in six games. All-Star Paul DeJong hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Edman broke it open an inning later. Reliever Robert Stephenson (2-2) allowed four hits and five runs while getting just two outs. Eugenio Suarez hit a solo home run in the first inning and added a sacrifice fly in Cincinnati’s two-run third as the Reds built a 3-0 lead. Hudson (9-4) gave up six hits and three runs with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings.

Nationals 13, Braves 4

ATLANTA

Stephen Strasburg had a three-run homer among his three hits and set a franchise-record for a pitcher with five RBIs, as the surging Washington Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves. Strasburg (12-4) lasted only 51/3 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs. After the Nationals knocked rookie right-hander Kyle Wright (0-3) allowed seven runs and seven hits with three walks — all in the third inning — in 22/3 innings.

Marlins 4, Padres 3

MIAMI

Brian Anderson doubled home the winning run with one out in the ninth inning, and the Miami Marlins earned their first walkoff victory of the year by beating the San Diego Padres. The score was 3-all when Garrett Cooper singled in the ninth against Trey Wingenter (1-3). Five Marlins pitchers combined for 15 strikeouts. Sergio Romo (2-0) had two strikeouts in a perfect ninth. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit his 15th homer for the Padres. Miami’s Harold Ramirez hit his fourth.

Phillies 7, Dodgers 6

PHILADELPHIA

Bryce Harper tied the game in his Phillie Phanatic headband with an RBI single and Rhys Hoskins ripped a two-RBI single in the seventh inning to rally the Philadelphia Phillies to a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Phillies closer Hector Neris earned his 18th save. Ranger Suarez (2-0) pitched 11/3 scoreless innings in relief.
