Struthers City Schools announced Tuesday mnight during a Board of Education meeting on Tuesday that its mew athletic complex will be named for Steve Belichick, the father of New England England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.

Steve Belichick was a Struthers High School graduate and member of the school’d Hall of Fame.

Belichick was a standout football player and three-time captain for Struthers from 1934-1936. He continued his football career at Western Reserve University — now known as Case Western Reserve University — from 1938-40 and then in the National Football League with the Detroit Lions, beginning in 1941.

After serving in World War II, Steve Belichick began a long coaching career. From 1946-49, he was the head football coach and the head basketball coach at Hiram College. He continued on as an assistant in college football with stints at Vanderbilt (1949–52), North Carolina (1953–55), and the United States Naval Academy (1956–89).

The stadium complex will be named in his honor, paying respect to his family’s devotion to the game and continuing the wildcat legacy to always do more than is required.

YSU’s golf schedule finalized for 2019-20

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State men’s golf team is slated to play five tournaments in four different states, including one northeastern Ohio, from early September to late October.

The Penguins will begin their season on Sept. 1-2 with the Missouri Tiger Intercollegiate at Turning Stone Resort in Verona, N.Y. YSU has started the previous two seasons at the same event against competitive fields that have included teams from the Big East, ACC and SEC.

YSU will continue the fall season with the Joe Feaganes Marshall Invitational at Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington, W.Va. (Sept. 9-10). The Penguins have set a new school record for lowest 36-hole team performance at the event in each of the last two campaigns.

After a break of nearly three weeks, YSU will make the short trip north on I-76 for the Akron Firestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron (Sept. 30-Oct. 1). The Penguins will continue their fall slate with the West Virginia Mountaineer Invitational at Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W. Va. (Oct. 1-2). The team will then conclude the fall season with the Towson Fall Invitational at Prospect Bay Country Club in Grasonville, Md. (Oct. 19-20).

QB Smith sheds brace 8 months after injury

ASHBURN, Va.

Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith has finally shed the massive brace on his right leg eight months after breaking his tibia and fibula in gruesome fashion.

Smith’s wife, Elizabeth, posted a photo Monday of him holding the ring external fixator in his hand. The team’s Twitter account re-posted that picture with the message, “The brace is off! A great step for Alex in his recovery.”

Given the severity of the injury, it’s unlikely Smith plays this season and Washington selected QB Dwayne Haskins in the first round. Smith recently said he plans to play in the NFL again and is under contract through 2022.

Coach Jay Gruden said last month that Smith’s recovery “is going to be a pretty lengthy process.”

49ers sign K Gould to four-year contract

SANTA CLARA, Calif.

The San Francisco 49ers have signed kicker Robbie Gould to a four-year contract.

The 49ers had placed the franchise tag on Gould in February for a price tag of about $5 million and faced a Monday deadline to sign him to a long-term deal. ESPN reported that Gould received a deal worth $19 million with a fully guaranteed $10.5 million in the first two years.

Gould, 36, had stayed away from the team during the offseason program and requested a trade back to Chicago where he started his career and where his family still lives.
