Boggess named to USSCA scholar team

Trevor Boggess, a 2019 graduate of Boardman High School, was selected to the United Stated Soccer Coaches Associations Scholar All-Region Team for the 2018-2019 school year.

Boggess was one of five players from Ohio to earn the recognition.

While at Boardman, Boggess was a four-year letterman, two-time team captain, a three-time All-District first team selection for Division 1 and a two-time All-Conference AAC Red Tier first team selection.

Last season, Boggess was the District Division 1 and AAC Red Tier Conference Player of the Year as well as a second team All-State selection along. He was named Mr. Youngstown for boys soccer.

Boggess led the Spartans to a 12-4-3 record and a second-place finish in the Red Tier. He will attend Kent State University in the fall, majoring in Biology.

Ryan siblings excel at ASAP meet in Warren

For the second consecutive year, Andrea Ryan won the 100-meter dash (14.58) and the 200 (30.96) in the 9-10 year-old division at the Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention meet in Warren Saturday. Her brothers, Nick Ryan and Antonio Ryan also competed.

Nick Ryan was runner-up in the long jump and the 200, and third in the 100 (12.78) in the 13-15 division. Antonio Ryan was sixth in the 50-yard dash for ages 4-6.

Lewis Hamilton claims record 6th British GP

SILVERSTONE, England

Formula One championship leader Lewis Hamilton won a record sixth British Grand Prix on Sunday after jumping ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas by taking advantage of the safety car being deployed.

In front of his home fans, Hamilton made the decisive move to the front in the 20th of the 52 laps by pitting to get new tires. With the safety car still out after Antonio Giovinazzi spun off in his Alfa Romeo, Hamilton rejoined ahead of pole-sitter Bottas.

After finally moving into the lead, Hamilton avoided pitting again so stayed on hard tires while Bottas was on fresher soft ones but the world champion still set a lap record on the final lap.

Charles Leclerc of Ferrari completed the podium by finishing third.

Simon Pagenaud wins Toronto IndyCar race

TORONTO

Simon Pagenaud has won his third race of the season as IndyCar’s championship fight tightened Sunday in Toronto.

The win on the streets around Exhibition Place is the third of the season for Pagenaud, but first away from Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The Frenchman won the Indy 500 and the road course race at the speedway to save his job with Team Penske.

Pagenaud had to save fuel in the waning laps to hold off reigning series champion Scott Dixon. But Penske teammate Will Power caused a caution on the final lap and Pagenaud was able to coast to the finish in his Chevrolet.

Dixon’s runner-up finish denied Chip Ganassi Racing a weekend sweep. Ganassi got his first NASCAR win of the season Saturday night with Kurt Busch in Kentucky.

Alexander Rossi finished third, one spot ahead of IndyCar points leader Josef Newgarden.

Frittelli leaves John Deere with 1st victory

SILVIS, Illinois

Dylan Frittelli won the John Deere Classic on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, closing with a 7-under 64 for a two-stroke victory over Russell Henley.

The South African earned a spot next week in the British Open, finishing at 21-under 263 after the bogey-free final round at TPC Deere Run. He opened with rounds of 66,68 and 65 to begin the day two strokes back.

Frittelli birdied the par-5 17th after blasting out of a greenside bunker to 11 feet, and closed with a par on the par-4 18th.

Henley shot a tournament-best 61. Andrew Landry was 18 under after a 69.

Rookie Collin Morikawa (66) and Chris Stroud (67) followed at 17 under. Morikawa hit all 18 greens in regulation.
