YSU bowlers on NTCA All-Academic team

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown State bowling team has been recognized by the National Tenpin Coaches Association for academic excellence, and four individuals were named to the NTCA All-Academic team.

The Penguins posted a 3.211 cumulative grade point average during the 2018-19 academic year. It was the second time in the three-year history of the program that Youngstown State achieved the minimum GPA of a least 3.2 to appear on the list. There were 37 other programs in the country to post at least a 3.2 cumulative team GPA.

Individually, Emma Dockery (3.69), Nikki Mendez (3.46), Alexis Sullivan (4.0) and Emma Wasielewski (3.90) were named to the NTCA All-Academic Team. Dockery is a repeat honoree from 2017-18, while Mendez, Sullivan and Wasielewski are first-time honorees.

There are 256 honorees representing NCAA bowling programs at 55 schools, and the four selections for YSU is the highest number in the three-year history of the program.

Cleveland State fires Felton after 2 seasons

Cleveland

Dennis Felton’s stay at Cleveland State was short, and anything but sweet.

Felton was fired Friday after just two seasons with the program, which hasn’t been to the NCAA Tournament since 2009.

The 56-year-old Felton and his entire staff were let go by athletic director Scott Garrett, who reiterated the school takes its mission for student-athletes to have a “transformational experience very seriously.”

Felton, who replaced Gary Waters in 2017, went 22-44 in his two seasons. He previously coached at Western Kentucky and Georgia.

Cleveland State’s program has struggled in recent years, going 40-89 over the past four. The Vikings went just 5-13 in the Horizon League last season.

The school said former Vikings player and broadcast analyst Pat Vuyancih will serve as a special assistant for the program until a coach is hired.

Groenewegen sprints to victory in Stage 7

CHALON-SUR-SAONE, France

Less than a week ago in Brussels, Dylan Groenewegen sat dejected in the middle of a road, his body language oozing disappointment as he was attended by the Tour de France doctor.

One of the fastest sprinters in the world with one of the most powerful teams, the Dutch sprinter was expected to win the opening stage and seize the yellow jersey. Instead, he was caught in a crash and forced to watch his lead out man at Jumbo-Visma, Mike Teunissen, claim all the honors.

To add to his torment, Teunissen and Groenewegen are roomates on the Tour, meaning he had to spend the night with the yellow jersey in his room.
