Travis Fryman’s son leads Cyclones to rout of Scrappers

BROOKLYN, N.Y.

The Brooklyn Cyclones were on the run early and often against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Wednesday night at MCU Park.

The Cyclones had six doubles and a triple among 14 hits and they stole five bases in a 9-0 New York-Penn League victory over the Scrappers in a series opener.

A familiar name did much of the damage as Brooklyn shortstop Branden Fryman collected four hits, drove in two runs, scored twice and stole two bases.

Fryman is the son of former Scrappers manager Travis Fryman.

Travis Fryman played for the Cleveland Indians from 1998-2002 and managed the Scrappers — a minor-league affiliate of the Indians — from 2008-10.

Travis Fryman is now a roving hitting instructor in the Indians’ farm system.

The Cyclones are a New York Mets affiliate. Brooklyn (13-12) scored single runs in each of the first three innings, then blew the game open with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Cyclones closed out the scoring with two runs in the eighth.

Jake Mangum, Luke Ritter, Ranfy Adon and Guillermo Granadillo each added two hits for Brooklyn. Mangum tripled, stole a base and scored three runs. Fryman, Adon, Granadillo and Ritter all had doubles for the Cyclones.

Fryman’s four hits raised his batting average to .423.

Frank Valentino (1-1) started and went six scoreless innings for the victory for Brooklyn. He allowed two hits, walked one and struck out seven.

Jared Biddy struck out three and allowed one hit in two scoreless innings. Matt Mullenbach allowed a hit and struck out one in a scoreless ninth.

Jhonneyver Gutierez started and took the loss for the Scrappers (13-13). He allowed three hits and three runs in four innings. He walked two and struck out three.

Matt Waldron allowed seven hits and four runs in three innings and Luis Valdez gave up four hits and two runs in one inning.

One of the Scrappers’ four hits was a double by George Valera.

The teams will meet again tonight at 7:05.
