Seventh-grade students at St. Christine’s hosted International Day on May 23, celebrating their heritage.
Teacher Jennifer Dolaces said that this was the second time the school has hosted the event.
“It’s an opportunity for the kids to celebrate their nationalities,” Dolaces said.
She explained that earlier that week the students had turned in reports on the country’s their families are from.
After turning in reports, students chose a traditional food they learned about during the project.
They worked in groups, creating and decorating a table with their country’s colors and traditions.
Each student brought a traditional dish from home, and Dolaces said some students even dressed in traditional clothing.
“They spend time learning about the different cultures and traditions,” Dolaces said. “It gives them a deeper appreciation.”
She said that she came up with the idea to host the event as a way to celebrate how all of the students were different, but also similar.
“It brings them together, and shows that America is really a country of immigrants,” Dolaces said.
