Dolphins’ Norton loses arm in accident

MIAMI

Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Kendrick Norton suffered multiple injuries in a car crash that required his left arm to be amputated.

Sports agent Malki Kawa confirmed the injuries in a tweet on Thursday morning.

Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Alex Camacho says the Ford F250 Norton was driving crashed into a concrete barrier and overturned early Thursday on State Road 836 near Miami.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews rendered aid to 22-year-old Norton, who was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.

Norton played at the University of Miami and was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round in 2018. He spent much of last season on their practice squad. The Dolphins signed him in December.

LaStella among four to miss All-Star Game

Los Angeles Angels second baseman Tommy La Stella will miss the All-Star game because of a broken bone after he fouled a 97 mph fastball off his lower right leg.

La Stella had a CT scan Wednesday that revealed a broken right tibia. The Angels said La Stella likely will be out 8-10 weeks.

Texas Rangers outfielder Hunter Pence, who had been selected by fans to be the AL starting designated hitter, and Minnesota right-hander Jake Odorizzi also will miss the All-Star Game in Cleveland on Tuesday because of injuries.

La Stella fouled off a pitch by hard-throwing reliever Jose Leclerc in Tuesday’s night’s game at Texas. La Stella immediately dropped to the ground and was putting no weight on his right leg when being helped off the field.

A first-time All-Star selected as a reserve, La Stella was to be replaced by Tampa Bay’s Brandon Lowe on the AL squad. But Lowe was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a bruised right shin.

Pence was replaced by Boston’s Xander Bogaerts. Pence has been out since June 16 with a right groin strain and was pulled off his rehab assignment Tuesday after re-aggravating the injury during a minor league game.

Minor league team deletes mocking tweet

A Chicago Cubs minor league affiliate has apologized and deleted a tweet mocking former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

A day after Nike recalled a sneaker that featured an early American flag at Kaepernick’s urging, the Double-A Tennessee Smokies drew the 13-star symbol on their infield Wednesday and tweeted images of it.

“Hey (at)Kaepernick7 after a lot of thought, we have decided it’s best to just do it. (hash)America,” the tweet said.

The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Kaepernick aired concerns to Nike over the release of the Air Max 1 USAs and its use of the Betsy Ross flag, which he said recalls an era when African-Americans were enslaved and has been appropriated by white nationalist groups.

Nike recalled the shoe before it was due to go on sale for the July Fourth holiday.

Connor Pearce, marketing and community relations manager for the Smokies, told the AP on Wednesday night that “it was just a light-hearted take on a current situation.” The team then deleted the tweet, saying “we did not mean to offend anyone by it. If it did, we certainly apologize.”

Bobridge jailed for dealing drugs

PERTH, Australia

Two-time Olympic cycling silver medalist Jack Bobridge has been jailed for more than four years after being found guilty of dealing drugs following his retirement after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

Bobridge was part of the Australian silver medal-winning team pursuit at Rio and at the 2012 Olympics in London. He also won two gold medals at the world championships in team pursuit and one in the individual pursuit.

The 29-year Bobridge was convicted in Perth’s District Court today on four charges of supplying ecstasy tablets to a former friend in Perth.
