The Poland library hosted a summer reading event for teenagers on June 25.
The Guardians of the Stars and Universe was a mash up fandom party for teenagers in seventh grade or older.
“We try to do one big event for teenagers each year for the summer reading program,” said librarian Cindy Beach.
The event was organized with help by the library’s teen advisory board.
“They told us what they liked and what was cool,” Beach said. “They came up with a lot of the ideas for the program.”
Beach said that around 15-18 teenagers are part of the group that meets once a month.
Librarian Amy Burkard runs the group.
“It’s a fun group of teens that really help out when it comes to these programs,” Burkard said.
Beach said many members of the group attended the event, but many nonmembers were also present.
During the event, teenagers were able to work their way through a number of themed stations based on space themed pop culture favorites.
Teenagers made lightsabers from pool noodles, and string art of TIE fighters, based on the Star Wars movies. The library also provided Star Wars themed corn hole and Bloxels, a game that allows teenagers to create their own video game on a tablet.
A Steven Universe themed guessing game was available for students to test their space themed fandom trivia knowledge.
Participants were also able to create space themed bead art and book marks. The library also provided snacks for the participants and hosted a cosplaying competition.
“We just wanted to do something fun for everyone to take a break and enjoy the summer,” Burkard said.
