BOYS BASKETBALL

The Poland and Bristol basketball teams have cracked the Top 10 in this week’s Associated Press poll of state schools. In Division II, Poland (11-2) is ranked 10th with 31 points and one first-place vote. In Div. IV, Bristol (13-2) is fifth with 132 points and one first-place vote. Boardman just missed making the Div. I Top 10 — the Spartans have 19 points and one first-place vote for 11th. In Div. III, LaBrae is 14th with 12 points. In Div. IV, Springfield is 13th with 17 points.

FOOTBALL

Boardman football players recognized by OHSFCA

The Ohio High School Football Coaches Association has recognized 22 members of the Boardman High School football team as an Academic All Ohio Team. The OHSFCA also recognized senior Tino Arcuri as an Individual Academic All Ohio Player. Arcuri will play football for Army and attend West Point in the fall. “It really means a lot to our guys, since Boardman’s academics are rigorous and our players have to be very focused and work hard to excel to such a degree,” Boardman head football coach Joe Ignazio said. The other players are Che Trevena, Jimmy Hoffman, Connor Miller, Nikitas Missos, Louis Craven, Dave Merdich, Tyler Peterson, Isaac Land, Ty Ventresco, Tommy Fryda, Nate Thompson, Wrentie Martin, Zach Ryan, Nick Yallech, Brandon Kuehn, Nate Cuttica, Michael O’Horo, Cam Kreps, Brandon Zagotti, Kareem Hamdan and Mikey Morris.

TRACK AND FIELD

The OHSAA Track and Field state rules meeting has been rescheduled for Feb. 7 at 5:30 p.m. at Austintown Fitch High School. The meeting was originally scheduled for Thursday.

SWIMMING

The Warren Harding High School competed against five other teams on Saturday at Spire, winning all of the dual meets. Scores were 120-17 (Conneaut), 106-55 (Lakeside), 127 (Edgewood), 124-30 (Jefferson) and 122-19 (Kirtland). Tino DiCenso won two races (50 freestyle, 100 breastsroke) and was on two winning relay teams (200 medley, 200 freestyle). Matthew Vencel won the 200 IM and 100 freestyle. Brendan Leecue won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. The Harding girls team won four of its five meets. The Raiders’ winning scores were 90-34 (Conneaut), 89-65 (Edgewood), 89-62 (Jefferson) and 79-67 (Kirtland), The loss was to Lakeside (84-82). Mia Mowatt-Larssen won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Lydia Walls won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly.
