UPDATE | Guilty verdicts in case of man who shot at cops

YOUNGSTOWN — A jury in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court today found Gerald Wainwright, 26, guilty of two counts of felonious assault on a police officer for firing at two city officers last January.

Jurors heard closing arguments in the case this morning before Judge Maureen Sweeney and announced their verdicts about 1:15 p.m.

Police said they were trying to question Wainwright, who was walking in the street wearing a mask, when he ran away and then fired several shots at officers Timothy Edwards and Brandon Caraway.

The officers returned fire, striking Wainwright three times, including once in the neck. The officers were not injured.

An internal affairs investigation found the shooting justified.
