STARTING SEEDS

When: Monday, 9:30 a.m. to noon

What: It may be cold outside, but you can still start to think about starting your seeds. A good start is key to the success of any plant; learn how to start those seeds. Speaker will be Peg Zeleznik, master gardener volunteer.

Where: OSU Extension Office, 490 S. Broad St., Canfield.

Cost: $15 per person includes refreshments, handouts and giveaways.

HAND FEED A Chickadee

When: Saturday, 9 to 11 a.m.

What: Black-capped chickadees are inquisitive birds that can be coaxed into landing on your hand. Learn more about these songbirds with a naturalist.

Book Discussion: The Invention of Nature

When: Saturday, 10:30 a.m.

What: Alexander Von Humboldt was considered a visionary in his ideas about the complex interconnections of nature. Read and enjoy Andrea Wulf’s account of this early naturalist and his important influence on the way we understand the natural world. Then join our discussion to share your thoughts.

Hike with a Naturalist

When: Today, noon to 2 p.m.

What: Enjoy a wintry walk in the woods and see what Sawmill Creek Preserve has to offer. Join Naturalist Bill Gilmour as you check out this gorgeous creek.

Where: Sawmill Creek Preserve, South Turner Road, Canfield.

Cost: Free

Details: Moderate difficulty with hills, 4 miles. Space limited; register at Ford Nature Center by today. Park at the Turner Road Access; hike starts there.

Winter Walk

When: Sunday, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

What: Enjoy a winter walk. Breathe in the crisp cool air, take in the sights, and listen to the sounds breaking the calmness of winter with naturalist Nick Parish.

Winter Haiku Writing

When: Sunday, 2-4 p.m.

What: The forests and fields of the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center have a different feel during the winter, and we will try to capture those emotions as we write and share our original haiku poems.

Where: The nature center, 16146 Daniel St. NE, Minerva.

Details: Outdoor dress. Open to all ages. Register by Friday.
