Mardi Gras Party to benefit Hospice of the Valley
Hospice of the Valley will host their 17th annual Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 9 at Mr. Anthony’s, located at 7440 South Ave. in Boardman. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with champagne and hor d’ouvres. Featured at the event will be a silent auction, food, drinks, dancing to Ovation and DJ Bryan Ladd, a 50/50 raffle, psychic readings, Spin and Win presented by Komara Jewelers and more. Honorary chairs for the event are John and Denise York, DeBartolo Corporation and Patt and Doug Sweeney, Sweeney Chevrolet. Donation for the evening’s festivities is $100 per person. The public is invited. Sponsorship tables available. One hundred percent of the proceeds stay local to benefit Hospice of the Valley and their mission to provide comfort and compassionate care to those at the end of life as well as support for their families, doing so since 1979. ABWA to meet on Feb. 12
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Feb. 12 meeting at Al A Cart Catering in Canfield. The meeting will begin with networking at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. The menu for the evening includes stuffed baked pork chops, Swiss chicken, mashed potatoes, California blend vegetables, tossed salad, apple sauce, pickled beets, dessert, coffee and tea. Kindergarten readiness stations
Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of February, the stations focus on cognitive skills. This includes the development of memory, symbolic thought, reasoning and problem-solving. These skills support learning in all subjects. Before kindergarten, children should be able to communicate about past events and anticipate what comes next during familiar routines and experiences. They should also be able to solve everyday problems based upon past experiences. Our kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help your child be ready to learn when they get to school. Stop by any branch to visit a kindergarten readiness station and help your child build these important skills.
Canfield PTA giving cash away
The Canfield Local Schools PTA is hosting a ‘Crazy Cash Giveaway’ fundraiser. A total of 1,000 tickets will be sold at $50 per ticket. The grand prize will be $10,000. The winning ticket will be drawn on Feb. 22, during the boys varsity basketball game at Canfield High School. The winner need not be present. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Canfield library every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, which will take place every Thursday in February at 10 a.m. at the Canfield library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Gotta Move story time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Canfield library every Wednesday in February at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.
Chair yoga
The Canfield library will have a chair yoga class every Friday throughout February at 10 a.m. Pay as you attend. Class is $10 per session. Dress comfortably. This event is for adults.
Canfield Diamond Backers host auction
The Canfield Diamond Backers will host an All-In Auction at St. Michael’s Family Life Center on Feb. 2. Doors will open at 6 p.m., with the auction starting at 7 p.m. More than 75 items will be available for bid. Attendees may purchase the all-in-one bidding paddle. Alcohol, water and pop will be available for purchase and attendees may bring their own food. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door. Tables for eight-plus guests may be reserved. This is a beginner’s class that will cover the Word menus, and functions like cut/copy/paste, font, save and print. Some basic computer skills are required. Coloring for grown-ups
Visit the Canfield library on Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. to tap into your creative side with the newest relaxation craze of coloring for grown-ups. Colored pencils and markers will be provided along with intricate abstract and themed design sheets. This program is for teens and adults only. There will be a Valentine’s Day theme.
Science cafe
CRISPR is a growing technology that is used to edit genes. On Feb. 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Canfield library, learn how CRISPR is used, what effect is this having on science research, and the outlook of this new technology. This is for adults.

Line Dancing is a fun, exciting activity to dance your way to good health. Line dances are very easy to learn, mainly because the steps are straightforward, and you do not have to coordinate your movements with a partner. Line dances also involve repeating series of steps, so if you get lost, can easily catch up with the rest of the class. This class at the Canfield library on Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. will combine low, moderate and high energy line dance routines. This event is for adults and teens.

Sit and stitch with others at the Canfield library on Feb. 13 at 11 a.m. Share ideas and skills while making new friends. Bring your UFOs (unfinished objects): quilting, appliqu , knitting, or crochet projects, and supplies. This is not an instructor-led activity. This event if for adults.
Facebook for beginners
Visit the Canfield library on Feb. 18 at 10 a.m. to learn how you can connect with family and friends on Facebook. The librarians will help you personalize your profile so that you can start posting, sharing and liking right away. If you need help setting up an account, contact your library before the class. This beginning Excel class will discuss cell size, basic math, number formats, AutoSum, cell appearance, math in unconnected cells, and printing. Off the shelves
At this monthly book club at the Canfield library on Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m., a lively discussion will occur of titles chosen ‘off the shelves’ of the Canfield library’s book club room. For February, the chosen book is ‘Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann. A morning session will take place on Feb. 28 at 11 a.m. You may attend one or come to both. This event is for adults. The book for March will be “Leaving Time” by Jodi Picoult.
Blood drive

Pasta dinner fundraiser to benefit mission trip
A pasta dinner will take place at the Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road (State Route 62) in Canfield, on Jan. 27 from 12-2 p.m. The dinner will consist of pasta, salad, bread and butter, beverage and dessert. The cost is $10 for adults, $7 for children who are ages 6-12 and free for children who are ages age 5 and younger. Carry-out is available. Funds raised will support the Feb. 23 through March 2 mission trip to Baton Rouge, La.

Informational meeting for incoming kindergarten families
The Canfield Local School District is hosting an informational meeting for parents or guardians of all incoming kindergarten students on Feb. 20 at 6 p.m. at C.H. Campbell Elementary School. This meeting is for students entering C.H. Campbell and Hilltop Elementary schools. The session will include information about transportation, school procedures, kindergarten readiness, age requirements and becoming involved in your child’s school. Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle
Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the raffle at 7 p.m. A Chinese auction, games of chance and 50/50 drawings will also be available. 4-H community open house set
A 4-H community open house will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the Greenford Ruritans Building at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Feb. 7. The open house is an opportunity to talk to adult 4-H leaders and current 4-H youth members and ask questions. Attendees will be able to find out more information about 4-H and how to join a club. Some of the more than 200 projects will be available to see and experience. These projects include more than just livestock, such as, veterinary science, clothing and textile science, communication, creative arts, photography, genealogy, writing, food and nutrition, healthy living, leadership and citizenship, money management, science, technology, engineering, math, natural resources, woodworking and more.
Cooks to compete Cardinal style
The third annual Cardinal Chili Cook-Off will take place on Feb. 8, and the public is welcome to participate. The categories will include Hot and Spicy, Thick and Hearty, Unconventional Chili and People’s Choice. The judges will award a $20 cash prize and a trophy to the winner in each category. Once the judging is complete, the chili dinner will be open for all to try. The deadline for entry is Jan. 18. Each chili entrant will also receive two free tickets to the Chili Cook-Off dinner, which will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. The menu features chili, corn bread, Italian bread, crackers, dessert and choice of beverage. Competitors should arrange to have their roasters picked up by 6:30 p.m. or roasters will be in the cafeteria all weekend.
Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this disease.
Cardinal Mooney hosts 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner
On Feb. 17, Cardinal Mooney High School will host its 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. Doors open at 6 p.m. for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. A dinner buffet will begin at 6:45 p.m. with the induction ceremony set for 8 p.m. Tickets are $75 each, with a table of eight for $600. All proceeds go directly to the Ron Stoops Scholarship Fund, which has been established by the Stoops family to provide tuition scholarships for students who attend Cardinal Mooney. Slime time for tweens
Join the Canfield library in the laboratory on Jan. 26 at 2:30 p.m. as they create several slime species. Try your hand at making and playing with unicorn, fluffy, galaxy, clear and glow-in-the-dark varieties of slime. All necessary supplies will be provided, including containers to bring home a sample or two. Light snacks and a drink will be enjoyed after clean up. This event is for tweens who are ages 9-12.
Chocolate cake day
Bring your favorite chocolate cake recipe to the Canfield library on Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. to share. Come learn about the history and health benefits of chocolate, try your luck at a chocolate trivia quiz, play a competitive game and taste a chocolate dessert. A tasty treat will be served.
