The Austintown library hosted a Baby Brilliant preschool story time on Dec. 26.

Librarian Allison Graf said that the theme of the event is bears.

“We have a lot of good stories about bears and what bears do in the winter,” Graf said.

She explained that the goal of the program is to help children learn early literacy skills while having fun.

“It’s about getting them ready for kindergarten,” Graf said. “They learn these skills and they don’t event know they are learning anything,”

The program combines music and movement games, as well as reading, to help prepare children for the beginning of school.

Children ages 4-5 were welcome to attend, accompanied by an adult.

She said that while the program has a strong following, the numbers have dropped off.

To help combat this and make the program more available to working parents, Graf said the library chose to do a story time once a month in the evening instead.

“We aren’t getting read of the program, but reworking it to make it available to more people,” Graf said.

The first of these evening story times will take place on Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

“We are really looking forward to having our usual attendants as well as new people at this event,” Graf said.
