1901: Britain’s Queen Victoria dies at age 81 after a reign of 63 years; she is succeeded by her eldest son, Edward VII.

1917: President Woodrow Wilson, in an address to Congress, pleads for an end to the war in Europe, calling for “peace without victory.” (By April, however, America also was at war.)

1968: The fast-paced sketch comedy program “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh-In” premieres on NBC-TV.

1973: The U.S. Supreme Court, in its Roe v. Wade decision, legalizes abortions using a trimester approach.

Former President Lyndon B. Johnson dies at his Texas ranch at age 64.

1987: Pennsylvania treasurer R. Budd Dwyer, convicted of defrauding the state, proclaimed his innocence at a news conference before pulling out a gun, placing the barrel in his mouth and shooting himself to death in front of horrified onlookers.

2008: Actor Heath Ledger, 28, is found dead of an accidental prescription overdose in a New York City apartment.

2018: President Donald Trump signs a bill reopening the government after a 69-hour shutdown.

1994: Officials are tying to find the source of a leak that is draining the 300,000-gallon Stoneboro, Pa., reservoir. A water emergency is declared by Stoneboro Mayor Jack Sanford.

Lisa Abraham, Warren Tribune Chronicle reporter, will spend the weekend in Trumbull County Jail after refusing to testify before a grand jury about a story she wrote based on an interview with county engineer James Fiorenzo. Judge John Stuard declined to hold an expedited hearing on a motion by Atty. Charles Richards to quash a subpoena issued by special prosecutor Jonathan Rosenbaum.

1979: A two-alarm fire does $100,000 damage to the Park Burlesque Theater at 444 W. Federal St. A disgruntled dancer at the theater who threatened to burn the theater down was arrested on an open charge.

Exuberant Pittsburghers take to the streets to celebrate the Steelers 35-31 victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl XIII. Both teams had two Super Bowl rings going into the game.

Former Youngstown Mayor Frank R. Franko is indicted by a special Franklin County grand jury on a charge of theft in office for allegedly falsifying daily work records at various state highway garages.

1969: Speaking at the 52nd annual meeting of Youngstown’s Associated Neighborhood Centers, the Rev. Lonnie A. Simon, pastor of New Bethel Baptist Church, says “any community which fails to change with the times risks destruction.”

Boardman Township trustees plan to meet in a closed-door session with police Chief Don Hawkins to discuss what appears to be a discipline problem in the department. Among the issues: one patrolman had three accidents with cruisers in six days, and another called off sick but was seen out and about that day.

A planned three-day boycott of the Youngstown State University cafeteria led by student Jeffrey Altshul fizzles, but cafeteria manager Joe Graziosi says student complaints about the food will be addressed.

1944: The three children of Mr. and Mrs. John Sweeney burn to death when fire sparked by an overheated furnace sweeps their Division Street home.

A 17-year-old Warren youth is shot and killed shortly after 12:30 a.m. during what police say was an attempt to break into a Youngstown Road gas station owned by Alexander Soke. Soke fired at the intruder and hit him in the mouth.

Cpl. Michael Tyhosky, Salt Springs Road, is killed on a South Pacific Island when he was struck by a falling tree.
