There was “snow” basketball game at Beeghly Center on Sunday thanks to a leaky roof.
The women’s basketball game between Youngstown State and Northern Kentucky was delayed by more than an hour and ultimately postponed because of two leaks over the court near the Penguins’ bench.
The teams warmed up as usual during their pregame routines, but the game — scheduled for 1 p.m. — never started.
After two lengthy announced delays and a series of discussions involving YSU and NKU representatives and the game officials, the decision was made that the game could not be played.
YSU spokesman John Vogel said the game has been rescheduled for today at 1 p.m. at Beeghly Center.
YSU head coach John Barnes said the Penguins team conducted their usual shoot-around from 7:45-to-9 a.m. before the leaks began.
“It was OK this morning, but I think right as we finished it started [leaking] from there and kind of got worse,” Barnes said.
The postponement gives both teams more time to prepare for one another. YSU is 13-5 overall and 5-2 in the Horizon League. NKU is 3-13 and 2-4.
“Our players are resilient,” Barnes said. “We’ll get some more rest, study up on the scouts a little more and come back tomorrow and play.”
Rick Love, YSU associate athletic director, said heavy snow Saturday night into Sunday morning contributed to the leaks in the roof of the 47-year-old Beeghly Center.
“With the amount of snow, it got underneath some of the vents and caused periodic dripping,” Love said.
Players from both teams spent the delays alternately shooting, stretching and talking on their respective benches. Several players for both teams periodically killed time by taking half-court shots.
