Boys varsity basketball win
The Boardman High School boys varsity basketball team defeated Lakeside on Jan. 8 with a score of 78-51. Ethan Andersen had a season high 18 points to lead the Spartans along with 10 rebounds for a double-double. Derrick Anderson had a good night with 17 points and seven assists. Che Trevena was the other Spartan in double figures with 12 points. Tommy Fryda got two 3’s on his way to eight points. Daeone Marine finished with seven points. Charlie Davis, Shaun Eicher and Connor Miller each had four points and Jimmy Goske rounded out the scoring with two points. Zach Ryan had a good floor game with three steals, four rebounds and four assists.
Freshman boys face off against Austintown
The freshman boys basketball team faced off against AAC rival Austintown Fitch on Jan. 7 and came away with the victory, 45-40. After falling behind by a couple points in the first quarter, the Spartans found success in the second quarter, outscoring Fitch by seven to take the lead into halftime. Austintown came out aggressive in the third quarter, converting several Boardman turnovers into points. They were able to sustain the momentum throughout the quarter and had a three point lead going into the fourth. The Boardman freshman then took control of the game in the final quarter, pulling away from the Falcons with a 14-3 scoring run. The run was ignited by two huge 3-pointers by Ben Alvarico and one by Anthony Hightower. The Spartans were able to hold off a late scramble by Fitch to seal the victory. Leading scorers for Boardman were Cam Thompson with 11 points and Alvarico with 10. Luke Ryan and Terence Thomas added six points each and Hightower and DJ Evans had five each. Rounding out the scoring was Carter Mraz with two points.
Girls JV team beats Lakeside, 43-17
The girls junior varsity basketball team was victorious over Lakeside on Jan. 7. Boardman finished the match with a score of 43-17. A nice defensive effort kept the Dragons to two points in the first and third quarters. A team effort contributed to a nice win as the Spartans put 11 players in the score column. The maroon and white were led by Bailey Moore’s eight, Tanna Ortega’s seven and Emma Tokarsky’s six points. Madi Larch, Ryleigh Neill, Priya Shah and Tini Zheng each dropped four on the Dragons. Emily Olexa and Emily Rutledge each added a basket for their two points while Kennedy Furano and Bella Larch added a free throw to round out the scoring. Signe Renstrom and Paige Jankowski’s rebounding and steals also contributed to several scores for Boardman.
Seventh-grade boys win
The seventh-grade boys white team put together a complete team effort to beat Lakeside on Jan. 7 with a score of 48-32. Jack Ericson led all scorers with 19 points, while Jaden Payen and Landon Mitchell each finished with eight. DeMayne Earvin and Noah Ziak added four points and JT Long and John Burton both finished with two. Ryan Conti scored one point to finish the scoring and Big Money Jack Neill owned the paint with his strong defensive play.
Girls basketball claims success against Lakeside
The Boardman girls’ basketball team improved to 9-3 on the season and 2-0 in the AAC Red Tier with a 75-23 victory over the visiting Dragons of Lakeside on Jan. 7. The Spartans jumped out to a 32-2 lead after one and never looked back. Boardman was led in scoring by Raegan Burkey who had a game high 22 points. She was perfect from 3-point range, going four for four beyond the arc. Three other Spartans netted double digits as Cate Green, Maria Torres and Serene Khatib all hit for 10 points. Green had five steals and Torres had four to go along with their points. Katie Stamp scored seven points, while Cailyn Covan had five. Bailey Moore and Alicia Saxton each had four points and Kennedy Furano rounded out the scoring with three. Sharp shooting was the reason for the offensive explosion as the Spartans shot more than 40 percent from the 3-point line and 92 percent from the free throw line.
Eighth-grade boys team defeats Lakeside
The Boardman boys eighth-grade basketball white team beat Lakeside 53-22 on Jan. 7. After a neck-and-neck start, Boardman’s defense clamped down on the Dragons, allowing only nine points in the remaining three quarters. Offensively, the Spartans were once again led by Alex Micco with 17 points and seven rebounds. Guards Cam Stanley and Ahmir Colpetro scored 14 and 11, respectively. Isaiah Torres had his biggest output of the year by contributing 10 points.
Boardman High School wrestlers fall to Canfield
The Boardman High School boys wrestling team fell to Canfield with a score of 58-12 on Jan. 9. Sean O’Horo won his 18th match with a pin and Tyler Rea and Tristan Hutchko won decisions. All three are freshman.
Seventh-grade girls beat Jackson Milton
The Boardman girls seventh-grade Maroon basketball team defeated Jackson Milton 34-22 on Jan. 10. Leading scorers for the Spartans were Ava Bosnjak (20), Hannah Saluga (8) and Gabby Goddard (6). Defense from Cici Johnson, Camryn Lyda, Dana Qutail and Brooke Yoder were key to the victory. The ladies are 5-4.
Freshman boys beat Lakeside
The Boardman boys freshman basketball team beat Lakeside 55-26 on Jan. 10, improving to 11-0 on the season. After trailing by six at the end of the first quarter, the Spartans found their stride on the defense, forcing eight turnovers. Leading the defensive charge was Terence Thomas, who was able convert the turnovers into nine points in the quarter. The Spartans held Lakeside to four points in the third quarter and zero points in the fourth. Anthony Hightower was the leading scorer for Boardman with 10 points. Terence Thomas finished the game with nine, to go along with eight points from Ben Alvarico.
Varsity boys basketball defeats Howland
The Boardman High School boys varsity basketball team won their fifth game in a row, defeating Howland 73-42 on Jan. 11. The Spartans led 26-7 after the first quarter. Howland battled back in the second quarter, pulling within 10 at halftime. Boardman was able to out-score Howland 22-6 in the third quarter to put the game away. Boardman put four players in double figures, led by Derrick Anderson who matched his season average of 17 points, along with five assists. Che Trevena had 13 points, six steals and five assists. Ethan Andersen collected 11 points and eight rebounds. Daeone Martin also reached double figures with 10 points, while collecting five rebounds. The Spartans are now 9-3 and 3-0 in the AAC.
Girls JV basketball team suffers loss
The Boardman High School Spartans girls junior varsity basketball team fought hard in a 41-36 loss to the Howland Tigers on Jan. 12. Howland improves to 10-3 while Boardman fell to 4-7. The game was tied at the half and was back and forth into the fourth quarter where Howland ended up going 4-4 from the free throw line in the final minute to put the game away. Jenna Olexa scored 18 points on four three pointers. Bailey Moore and Emma Tokarsky notched five points each for the maroon and white.
Girls varsity basketball team wins on the road
The Boardman High School girls varsity basketball team improved to 10-3 and 3-0 in the AAC with a 51-43 victory on the road versus the Howland Tigers on Jan. 12. The win is the Spartans sixth win in their last seven games. Boardman held a slim 12-11 lead after the first quarter, but then out-scored the Tigers 18-12 in the second quarter to take a 30-23 halftime advantage. Howland cut the lead to three heading to the fourth. In the fourth quarter, the Spartans out-scored Howland 15-10 to win the game. Boardman was led in scoring by Maria Torres who recorded a double-double with a game high 18 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Sophomore Raegan Burkey also chipped in with double digits as she had 10 points as well as four steals and three assists. Cate Green had nine points, three assists and three steals.
Girls varsity swim team takes first place
The Boardman High School Girls varsity swim team continued their conference success by winning their second AAC League Conference title in two weeks. Mikel Flatley won Female Swimmer of the Meet. The girls 200 freestyle relay team of Flatley, Ali Kuras, Alyssa DiNapoli and Jennah Markovitch set a new AAC record by placing first with a time of 1:42.32. The same four girls also won the 400 freestyle relay (3:49.77). Other top three places to note: 200 medley relay team of Ella Huston, Abby Yocum, Sarah Varga and Ali Kuras placed first with a time of 1:58.82, Yocum placed third in the 200 individual medley and second in the 100 breast, Flatley placed first in the 50 freestyle and second in the 100 butterfly, Jennah Markovitch placed third in the 50 freestyle and third in the 500 freestyle, Alyssa Dinapoli placed first in the 100 freestyle and second in the 100 backstroke and Hayley Ho placed first in the 100 breaststroke. Madison Ricciuti placed first in 1 meter diving, with Jordan Jones placing second in 1 meter diving.
Boys varsity swim team wins second conference meet
The Boardman High School boys varsity swim team continued their dominating performance by winning their second conference meet in two weeks. Noah Basista was named Male Swimmer of the Meet. Basista eclipsed the meet and pool record in the 100 breaststroke by swimming a 58.42. Basista also won the 200 individual medley (1:57.72). Matthew DunLany also set a meet and pool record in the 500 freestyle (4:53.26) by breaking a mark held by his brother, Aaron. DunLany also placed first in the 100 butterfly. The 200 medley relay team of River Flatley, Jordan Stackpole, Mason Rassega and Siman Mascola placed first, as did the 200 free relay team of Basista, Will Linker, Rassega and DunLany. The 400 frees relay team of DunLany, Basista, Stackpole and Linker also won the last race of the meet. Other top three finishers included Stackpole, who placed first in the 200 freestyle and third in the 100 breaststroke, Linker placed first in the 100 freestyle and second in the 50 freestyle, Rassega placed third in the 50 freestyle and second in the 100 freestyle, Carter Cailor placed third in the 500 freestyle and Flatley placed third in the 100 backstroke. Teddy Anzevino placed second in the 1 meter diving.
Boardman Community Baseball registration open
BCB will conduct player registration online at www.boardmanbaseball.com beginning on Jan. 1 through Feb. 17 for baseball players who are ages 4-18 and softball players who are ages 4-14. A $25 late registration fee will be charged for registrations received after Feb. 17 for boys and girls ages 4-14. A 2019 registration payment plan will be offered if you register before the Feb. 17 deadline. Your credit card will be charged on your registration date, March 15 and April 15. This plan will not be available to those who regigister after Feb. 17. The playing age determination date for boys is Aug. 31, 2019 and girls it is Dec. 31, 2018. On site or online registration will take place on Feb. 16 from 12-3 p.m. at the Fields of Dreams, located at 410 McClurg Road. For more information, check the website or call BCB at 330-758-2123.
