Additional auditions for “Godspell”

The Hopewell Theatre, 702 Mahoning Avenue, Youngstown, will have additional auditions for their production of “Godspell” on Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. Auditioners are asked to prepare a musical piece and bring the music for the accompanist to play. Chorus parts and one speaking role are still available. “Godspell” will run March 29, 30, 31 and April 5, 6, 7. Rehearsals will begin on Feb. 4. A special emphasis will be placed on diversity in casting. All ages older than 14 to senior citizen, all races, all gender identities and all body sizes are desired for this diverse and open production. Austintown jazz and dessert festival set for Jan. 26

The Austintown Band Parents Club, Inc. recently announced their fourth annual “Jazz and Dessert” event on Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. at the Austintown Middle School, located at 800 South Raccoon Road in Austintown. Established in 2016 as a benefit for the Austintown band programs, “Jazz and Dessert” is a festival that features four jazz bands and a competition among dozens of professional and amateur bakers and dessert makers from all over the valley. The event is open to the public with an admission of $6 per person. Admission includes 10 dessert samples. There will also be a Chinese bakery auction and a Chinese auction for an electric guitar and amplifier donated by Dan and Rick Barber of the Music Gallery. Amateur and professional bakers and dessert makers are invited to participate as contestants in this year’s event, no connection to the band is required. Saxon club has pork and kraut event

The Youngstown Saxon Club, located at 710 S. Meridian Road in Youngstown, will host their next pork-kraut dinner on Jan. 20 from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The price is $9.50 for adults and $5 for children, and this includes dessert and coffee, tea or pop. The public is welcome and takeouts are available.

Wolford joins Austintown Podiatry Associates

Austintown Podiatry Associates recently announced the addition of Dr. Ann Wolford. Her training includes both surgical and nonsurgical treatment of the foot and ankle as well as extensive training in management of diabetic wounds. She is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Medicine and board qualified by the American Foot and Ankle Surgery.

Cardinal Mooney High School to host community open house

Cardinal Mooney High School will host a free, public community open house from 1-4 p.m. on Feb. 10. The school is located at 2545 Erie St. in Youngstown. Prospective and current families will be given school tours hosted by current students. Academic departments, sports teams and extracurricular clubs will have information on hand. Dr. Flo joins Ankle and Foot Care Centers

Ankle and Foot Care Centers recently announced the addition of Dr. Jennifer Flo to its staff of physicians and surgeons. Dr. Flo is accepting new patients in the group’s Andover, Cornersburg and Struthers offices. With the addition of Dr. Flo, Ankle & Foot Care Centers now has 18 podiatric foot and ankle surgeons serving patients in 20 locations in eastern Ohio and western Pennsylvania. Dr. Flo specializes in diabetic foot care and wound care. In addition to treating patients in office and nursing homes, she plans to work with wound care clinics, as she is a board-certified wound care specialist.

Legacy Dog Rescue hosting reverse raffle

Legacy Dog Rescue is hosting its third annual Reverse Raffle on April 6 at the Avion on the Water in Canfield. A total of 125 tickets will be sold. The cost is $65 per ticket, which includes two dinners and one chance to win the grand prize of $1,500. Doors will open at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6 p.m. and the raffle at 7 p.m. A Chinese auction, games of chance and 50/50 drawings will also be available. 4-H community open house set

A 4-H community open house will take place from 6-8 p.m. in the Greenford Ruritans Building at the Canfield Fairgrounds on Feb. 7. The open house is an opportunity to talk to adult 4-H leaders and current 4-H youth members and ask questions. Attendees will be able to find out more information about 4-H and how to join a club. Some of the more than 200 projects will be available to see and experience. These projects include more than just livestock, such as, veterinary science, clothing and textile science, communication, creative arts, photography, genealogy, writing, food and nutrition, healthy living, leadership and citizenship, money management, science, technology, engineering, math, natural resources, woodworking and more.

Local church shows popular movie

Redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 2305 South Canfield-Niles Road in Austintown, will be showing the movie, “WALL-E,” at its next movie night in Redeemer’s Fellowship Hall on Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. Tickets are available (for free) after church on Jan. 13 and 20 and at the door. Tickets entitle the holder to free popcorn and a drink during the movie. This event is open to the public, and those in attendance are invited to bring your friends, neighbors and family to see the movie.

Gamblers Anonymous meetings

If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about 1.5 hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this disease.

Cardinal Mooney hosts 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner

On Feb. 17, Cardinal Mooney High School will host its 27th annual “Athletic Hall of Fame” dinner at the Lake Club, located at 1140 Paulin Road in Poland. Doors open at 6 p.m. for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. A dinner buffet will begin at 6:45 p.m. with the induction ceremony set for 8 p.m. Tickets are $75 each, with a table of eight for $600. All proceeds go directly to the Ron Stoops Scholarship Fund, which has been established by the Stoops family to provide tuition scholarships for students who attend Cardinal Mooney. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Austintown library every Wednesday in January at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies and books

This event, which will take place on Jan. 22 and 29 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.

Evening story time

This once-a-month evening story time features stories, movement and early literacy education. The next event will take place on Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Austintown library. The evening story time is open to anyone, but geared toward preschool children and their families.

Friends of Austintown Library meet

Aimee Fifarek, Executive Director of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County, will speak on reaching your dreams and goals through the public library at this event on Jan. 28 at 10 a.m. at the Austintown library. She will also speak on the state of our library system.

Gotta Move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library every Thursday in January at 10 a.m. for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play.

Guess the picture book

Guess the picture book from the cut-up cover at the Austintown library throughout regular hours in January. One winner will be chosen at random from correct entries. This event is for children of all ages.

Lego Mindstorms: build a robot

Build and program a Lego Mindstorms TRACK3R robot at the Austintown library on Jan. 19 at 2:30 p.m. TRACK3R is a crawler-mounted, all-terrain robot with four interchangeable tools. Start by building the body of the robot, then discover the possibilities of one or more of the four different TRACK3R tools: the bi-blade blender, the blasting bazooka, the gripping claw and the hammer. Stamping with Cindy

Learn to create your own handmade cards using stamps, punches and other fun tools at the Austintown library on Jan. 22 at 6:30 p.m. and Jan. 23 at 11 a.m. Sign up to create each month’s greeting card with matching envelope. Movie night

Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during a movie at the Austintown library on Jan. 29 at 6 p.m. Movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G. This event is for the family. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Kindergarten readiness stations

Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of January, the stations focus on social and emotional development, which is about learning how to manage feelings, manage friendships and solve problems. Before kindergarten, children should be able to recognize and identify their own emotions and the emotions of others. They should also be able to communicate a range of emotions in socially accepted ways. The kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help children be successful in their interactions with teachers and classmates when they get to school. Stop by any branch to try out our new kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.

The Hopewell Theatre announces 2018-19 season

The Hopewell Theatre recently announced its 2018-19 season, promising a lineup of contemporary, well-known shows, including two musicals. The Hopewell Theatre is located at 702 Mahoning Avenue in Youngstown. Upcoming shows are: Feb. 15-24 - “Raisin in the Sun,” March 29-April 7 - “Godspell,” May 10-19 - “Deathtrap” and June 7-16 - “On Golden Pond.” Flex passes are on sale for six shows for $60 for adults and $42 for seniors/students.

Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days.
