Mahoning County District Board of Health is conducting a free Project DAWN – Deaths Avoided With Naloxone – community training and naloxone-distribution event from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Jan. 23 at Mauthe Park, 156 Smithfield St. Pre-registration is not required. For information, call the health board at 330-270-2855, ext. 109.

Project DAWN is a community-based, drug-overdose education and naloxone distribution program that provides free take-home naloxone kits. Naloxone is a medication that can block the effects of opioids and can reverse an overdose from an opioid and save a life if given in time.

The training is for community members who may be in contact with someone using an opioid that is at risk of an overdose.

Participants will receive a Project DAWN kit and training on identifying risk factors for opioid overdose; recognizing an overdose; calling emergency medical services; giving intranasal naloxone; and monitoring the person until help arrives.
