Blue Jackets 2, Capitals 1, OT
WASHINGTON
Cam Atkinson scored his 25th goal of the season, Artemi Panarin connected in overtime and the Columbus Blue Jackets beat the Washington Capitals after the defending Stanley Cup champions lost All-Star goaltender Braden Holtby to an eye injury. Panarin scored in overtime for the second straight game. After Atkinson beat Holtby a minute into the game on a breakaway, Columbus was cruising toward a regulation victory until Evgeny Kuznetsov tied it with 1:06 left. The 6-on-5 goal was Kuznetsov’s first in 18 games dating to Dec. 2. But Panarin snapped Washington’s winning streak at four games and gave the Blue Jackets back-to-back wins with a power-play goal 3:30 into overtime.
Devils 3, Flyers 2
NEWARK, N.J.
Rookie Mackenzie Blackwood returned to the lineup after missing three games with an injury and made 32 saves in leading the New Jersey Devils to a victory over the Philadelphia Flyers. Damon Severson, Nico Hischier and Miles Wood scored as the Devils won for the second time in six games and handed the Flyers their ninth loss in the past 10 games (1-7-2). James Van Riemsdyk and Sean Couturier scored for Philadelphia. Carter Hart gave the Flyers a chance, making 23 saves.
Rangers 2, Islanders 1
NEW YORK
Mats Zuccarello scored late in the third period and the New York Rangers beat the Islanders for their first ever win at Barclays Center. Zuccarello redirected the winner with his skate from in front of the net for his fifth goal of the season. Filip Chytil also scored and Alexandar Georgiev made 24 saves to help the Rangers win in Brooklyn for the first time since the Islanders began playing home games there in 2015. The Islanders had been 13-2-0 in the teams’ previous 15 meetings overall.
Canadiens 3, Avalanche 0
MONTREAL
Carey Price stopped 28 shots for his third shutout of the season as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Colorado Avalanche. Brett Kulak, Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Jordie Benn all scored in the third period for the Canadiens, who had lost three of their last four games. Price got his 43rd career shutout. Semyon Varlamov gave up two goals on 30 shots for the slumping Avalanche, losers of nine of their last 10. After two scoreless periods, Kulak scored his second of the season to break the deadlock.
Bruins 3, Maple Leafs 2
TORONTO
David Pastrnak scored a tiebreaking goal late in the second period and the Boston Bruins defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs. Sean Kuraly had a goal and two assists, and David Krecji also scored for Boston. Tuukka Rask made 30 saves as the Bruins won the season series between the teams 3-1 and moved two points back of the Leafs for second place in the Atlantic Division. Mitch Marner and Andreas Johnsson scored for Toronto. Michael Hutchinson stopped 26 shots.
Lightning 5, Sabres 3
BUFFALO, N.Y.
Steven Stamkos scored the tiebreaking goal with 5:16 remaining to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to a win over the Buffalo Sabres. Nikita Kucherov, Brayden Point, Ondrej Palat and Ryan Callahan also scored for the Lightning, who have won 18 of their last 20. Louis Domingue stopped 30 shots. Stamkos put Tampa Bay ahead for good late, taking a drop pass from Kucherov and firing a hard shot to Ullmark’s blocker side.
Red Wings 5, Wild 2
ST. PAUL, MINN.
Tyler Bertuzzi recorded his first career hat trick and the Detroit Red Wings ended a three-game losing streak with a victory over the Minnesota Wild. Thomas Vanek had two goals for the Red Wings, winners for the second time in 11 games. Gustav Nyquist, Dylan Larkin, Jonathan Ericsson and Filip Hronek each had two assists. Nino Niederreiter and Luke Kunin scored for the Wild, who lost for the second time in three games and were booed by many fans remaining at the end. Playing in his 100th career game, Bertuzzi completed his three-goal performance at 8:38 of the third period, converting a feed from Nyquist by lifting a backhand past Devan Dubnyk.
