No. 4 Maryland 75, Ohio State 69

Kaila Charles scored 24 points, Stephanie Jones added 16 and No. 4 Maryland slipped past Ohio State in a rematch of the 2018 Big Ten title game. Coming off an upset loss to Rutgers, the Terrapins (13-1, 2-1) never really got into a groove against the retooled Buckeyes (4-8, 0-3). Maryland trailed 62-61 with 5:25 left, went ahead 70-66 on a 3-pointer by Taylor Mikesell with 3:04 to go and held on. Ohio State made only one basket over the final four minutes while being outscored 9-3. It was the 499th career victory for coach Brenda Friese, who’s 442-120 with the Terrapins after going 35-22 at Ball State and 22-8 at Minnesota. Though Maryland and Ohio State were the class of the conference last season, this Buckeyes squad bears no similarity to the one that captured the conference championship and finished 28-7.

No. 17 Gonzaga 88, Pacific 65

SPOKANE, WASH.

Zykera Rice scored 21 points, Jenn Wirth added 16 and No. 17 Gonzaga turned up the defensive pressure to win its 11th straight game, over Pacific. Jill Townsend added 13 points for the Bulldogs (15-1, 4-0 West Coast Conference), who went 23 of 36 in the middle two quarters and held the Tigers (9-4, 2-1) to 10 of 26. Pacific hit 4 of 5 3-pointers in the first quarter to open a 25-14 lead. But Gonzaga responded with 34 points in the second quarter and 26 in the third, in both cases doubling up the Tigers for a 74-55 lead entering the fourth.

No. 25 Iowa State 82, Kansas State 73

Bridget Carleton scored 33 points on 11-of-17 shooting, moving up two spots in Iowa State’s all-time top 10 scoring last, and the Cyclones defeated Kansas State. Kristin Scott had a perfect day shooting going 7 for 7 with three 3-pointers for 17 points for the Cyclones (12-2, 2-0 Big 12). Carleton moved up to seventh on the career list with her 29th 20-point game. Iowa State, which has won six straight, outscored the Jayhawks 22-12 in the second quarter to lead 39-29 at the half. The Cyclones were 5 of 10 from 3-point range and shot 57 percent overall in the first half. They stretched the lead to 17 after three quarters and 21 early in the fourth quarter before Kansas raced back. Christalah Lyons led Kansas (10-2, 0-1) with a career-high 24 points. The Jayhawks were off to their best start since opening 13-1 eight seasons back and had won seven straight at home before losing their seventh-straight to Iowa State.
