Salem Historical Society will host “Salem Second Saturday” to learn something new about something old from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 12 with staff available to assist with local research in the Dale Shaffer Library, 239 S. Lundy Ave. The gift shop also will be open.

Society opens exhibit for MLK Day

The Dale Shaffer Library museum and gift shop, 239 Lundy Ave., will be open with tours available by appointment from 9 a.m. to noon Jan. 21 in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. There will be a black history exhibit in Freedom Hall and anyone interested may learn more about Salem’s role in the Underground Railroad and the early black families who settled in Salem. Helping Hands Closet specials

Sunrise Inn’s 90th anniversary celebration

Sunrise Inn, 510 E. Market St., is celebrating its 90th anniversary with a contest in conjunction with WFMJ Television Inc. Beginning Jan. 12, twelve weekly winners will each receive $100 in Sunrise Inn gift certificates, and one grand prize winner will be awarded a $1929 gift certificate on April 1.

The contest is open to residents of Trumbull, Mahoning, Columbiana, and Mercer Counties who are 18 or older. Participants may enter once per day until March 27.

Library to host tech class

Salem Public Library, 821 E. State St., will offer a class taught by Kathy Bennett on how to safely and effectively use email at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 17 in the Quaker Room. The class is open to the public, suitable for adults and free of cost to attend. Attendees are encouraged to take a laptop computer or tablet in order to save classroom work if possible as the number of library devices may be limited.
