Penguins fall to Green Bay in OT

The Green Bay men’s basketball team made all 10 free throws in overtime to beat Youngstown State 99-93 on Saturday at the Resch Center.

The Penguins were 4 of 8 from the field in overtime and were outscored 16-10.

In the overtime period, a 3-pointer by Morgan and a jumper by Garrett Covington put the Penguins up 88-85 with 3:45 left. Green Bay, though, scored the next 10 points to take a 95-88 lead with 42 seconds remaining. Morgan cut the lead down to four, 95-91, with a 3-pointer but the Penguins would not get any closer.

The Phoenix trailed 44-37 at halftime, but took the midway through the second half. YSU (4-12, 0-3 Horizon League) led 83-81 after Morgan converted an and-1 opportunity with 56 seconds left.

Green Bay (8-7, 2-0 HL) tied on a pair of free throws by PJ Pipes with 32 seconds remaining. Covington’s go-ahead attempt with eight seconds left was blocked and Green Bay’s Sandy Cohen’s last-second shot was off the mark and forced overtime.

Darius Quisenberry led the Penguins with a career-high 24 points. He had two rebounds and five assists. Jelani Simmons set a career high with 17 points. Donel Cathcart III (15) and Morgan (11) also reach double figures for YSU.

JayQuan McCloud scored 24 points for the Phoenix. He also had four rebounds, five assists and two steals. PJ Pipes finished with 16 points while ShanQuan Hemphill added 10 points.

Foul trouble cost the Penguins late. Quisenberry, Simmons and Noe Anabir all fouled out. Green Bay was 25 of 36 from the free throw line. The Penguins were 14 of 15.

YSU led for 32:36 compared to 9:05 for the Phoenix. The Penguins also shot 51.6 percent from the field, 53.6 percent from 3-point range and 93.3 percent from the free throw line.

The Penguins have lost four straight. They’ve lost 10 of the last 12 since they won back-to-back games against Heidelberg and Columbia on Nov. 12 and Nov. 16.

Green Bay won their second straight after beating Milwaukee 92-82 on the road Saturday.

The Penguins will play the second game of their four-game road trip on Saturday at Milwaukee at 5 p.m.
