Workshop focuses on how to achieve your ideal weight
Join Dr. Ted Suzelis, ND on Jan. 10 from 6:30-8 p.m. for an informational workshop in Boardman. The 90 minute workshop will discuss a personalized program that will give participants everything needed to get started. Local financial company donates coats
Top Flite Financial in Boardman and HBA of the Valley donated coats to Liberty Middle School students on Dec. 20 at W.S. Guy Middle school. The company collected more than 100 coats between the beginning of November and the middle of December. Twenty-nine coats will be distributed to middle school students of Liberty. Top Flite Financial acquired the coats from business partners throughout the community. They set up a raffle where each donated coat led to a chance to win four tickets to see the Cleveland Cavaliers play.
Park announces they are taking reservations
Boardman Park recently announced that they are currently taking facility reservations for 2019 and will begin taking reservations for 2020 beginning on Jan. 1 online at www.boardmanpark.com or on Jan. 2 through the park office by calling 330-726-8105 or visiting the park office at 375 Boardman-Poland Road in the Georgeanna Parker Activity Center. Office hours are 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Mill Creek ABWA to have meeting on Jan. 8
The Mill Creek Chapter of ABWA (American Business Women’s Association) will host its Jan. 8 meeting at A LA Cart Catering in Canfield, beginning with networking at 6 p.m. and dinner at 6:30 p.m. The speaker for the evening will be Mary Grace Fowler of Holborn Herb Growers Guild. The Holborn Herb Growers maintain the gardens at the village in Canfield Fair grounds as well as the gardens at Boardman Park. They have an annual tea in September as a fundraiser to help with the expense of buying flowers for these gardens. The menu for the evening will be chicken crepes, ham and cheese strata, french toast sticks, bacon, Canadian bacon, home-fried potatoes, assorted pastries, fresh fruit, orange juice, coffee and tea. The cost is $17 per person and reservations may be made by calling Darlene Demjen at 330-755-9089 or Marilyn Abramski at 330-726-2527 by Dec. 31. The public is welcome.
Consumer information series: understanding video games
This program on understanding video games, which will take place from 1-2:30 p.m. on Jan. 11 at the Boardman library, provides a brief history of the medium, explores some of the appeal and controversies surrounding gaming and introduces consumers to important tools like ESRB (Electronic Software Ratings Board) ratings so they can make informed purchases. Tales and talk for 2s and 3s
Join the Boardman library on Jan. 9, 23 and 30 at 10 a.m. for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Bonding with babies and books
This event, which will take place on Jan. 8, 15, 22 and 29 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library, is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months. There will be 20 minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize.
Playtime at your library
Read a story at the Boardman library on Jan. 16 at 10 a.m. and have fun with developmentally appropriate games and activities that you can do with your child to help them get ready for kindergarten. Activities will vary at each program. This event is for children who are ages 2-6. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Night owl
Winter stories and a craft will be offered for children ages 4-5 on Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library. Preschoolers must attend this 30-minute story time with an adult.
Lego my library
Meet at the Boardman library on Jan. 12 at 10 a.m. and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children who are ages 6 and up.
Apprentice’s inn
Join the Boardman library’s beginners Dungeons and Dragons club on Jan. 16 at 6:30 p.m. and take part in a new adventure. Now is a great time to build a new character at the start of the library’s third campaign. Go on dangerous quests with daring fights and hopefully you roll a D20 to save the day. Refreshments and snacks are provided. This event is for teens in grades 7-12.
‘I Read YA’ book club
This event is for adult fans of young adult (YA) literature who are ages 18 and older. Talk about why you like YA. Read and discuss. On Jan. 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman library, they will be discussing “A Madness so Discreet” by Mindy McGinnis. This event is for adults.
Reader’s Choice book club
This book club will discuss “Mrs. Sherlock Holmes” by Brad Ricca on Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Boardman library. Share your favorite books and find out what new ones are being published. They will preview February’s book, “Before We Were Yours” by Lisa Wingate. This event is for adults.

Kindergarten readiness stations
Kindergarten readiness stations are in every Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County library branch and feature fun activities for you and your preschool child to complete together. For the month of January, the stations focus on social and emotional development, which is about learning how to manage feelings, manage friendships and solve problems. Before kindergarten, children should be able to recognize and identify their own emotions and the emotions of others. They should also be able to communicate a range of emotions in socially accepted ways. The kindergarten readiness stations offer fun activities to build these skills. Working on these skills now will help children be successful in their interactions with teachers and classmates when they get to school. Stop by any branch to try out our new kindergarten readiness stations and help your child build these important skills.
Friendly Squares January square dance
The Friendly Squares will host their monthly square dance on Jan. 12 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Niles SCOPE Center, located at 14 E. State Street in Niles. Neil Harner will be the caller and Frankie Hammond will be cuing line dances. This will be a high/low dance with alternating tips for new dancers currently taking lessons and tips for more experienced dancers. Dress is casual and light refreshments will be served. Healthy eating program set for Jan. 9
Healthy Eating for You, a free program sponsored by Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and led by a registered dietitian, will address portion size, reading and understanding nutrition labels, and learning to eat mindfully. Carter’s pajama drive to benefit patients at Akron Children’s
Now through Jan. 5, Carter’s in Boardman is collecting new pajamas for patients at Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley that will be distributed throughout the holiday season. Customers can purchase a pair of new pajamas for the drive when shopping at the Carter’s store in the Shops at Boardman Park. All donations will stay local for patients at the hospital’s Beeghly campus. Last year’s campaign resulted in donations of 2,032 pairs of pajamas at a value of $36,576. Gamblers Anonymous meetings
If you or someone you love has a gambling addiction, Gamblers Anonymous, the only known remedy for arresting such an illness, may be able to help. A meeting of Gamblers Anonymous will take place on Fridays at 7:30 p.m. at Westminster Presbyterian Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman. Another G.A. meeting will take place on Sundays at 7:30 p.m. at the Christ Presbyterian Church, located at at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). There is no charge for the meetings, although collections are taken up at each meeting to provide for coffee, sugar and creamer, treats and free literature. The average contribution given by members at most meetings is $2. Meetings last about one-and-a-half hours and are both closed meetings, or, you must have suffered from a gambling addiction to attend. The Youngstown-area G.A. groups are friendly and welcoming and established members love to see new members join the fold. They are more than happy to help suffering gamblers and are knowledgeable about how to stay clean from this dreadful disease.
Overeaters Anonymous to have local meetings
Overeaters Anonymous is offering meetings at several local locations and on a variety of days. On Saturdays at 10 a.m., there will be a meeting at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in the Church Hall, Room 2, located at 4453 Warren-Sharon Road in Vienna, Ohio. This location is handicapped accessible. On Sundays at 4:30 p.m., there will be a meeting at Shenango Presbyterian Church, located at 3144 Wilmington Road (Route 18) in New Castle, Pa.
