Penguins lose pair to Charlotte, Winthrop

Sophomore Yazmine Romero collected four hits on the day, but the Youngstown State softball team dropped a pair of games at the Charlotte First Pitch Classic on Sunday. The Penguins lost to Charlotte, 9-1, in five innings and Winthrop, 6-2.
In the opener against Charlotte (4-5), junior Maddi Lusk hit a solo home run, her second of the season, in the top of the second inning to give the Penguins (0-7) a 1-0 lead. Charlotte answered with a run in the bottom of the third, one in the fourth and seven in the bottom of the fifth inning to enforce the mercy rule.
Romero had YSU’s two other hits.
Elle Buffenbarger took the loss for the Penguins. Buffenbarger (0-3) allowed five runs — seven earned — on seven hits, including a solo home run by Katie Manring in the fourth. She struck out three in 4 1/3 innings pitched.
Against Winthrop (7-4), senior Lexi Zappitelli and Romero each went 2-for-4 and scored a run to lead the Penguins offensively. Junior Elizabeth Birkbeck drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and sophomore Milena Lacatena posted a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2.
Winthrop added two runs in the top of the second and one each in the top of the fifth and seventh innings.
YSU’s Addy Jarvis (0-3) allowed six runs — four earned — on three walks and nine hits, including a two-run homer to Morgan Lowers in the top of the first.
The Penguins will play Rhode Island in Charleston, S.C., on March 9.
Women’s Golf
YSU in seventh after Day 1 at Kiawah Island

The Youngstown State women’s golf team is tied seventh out of 49 teams after the first day at the Kiawah Island Spring Classic at Osprey Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C.
The Penguins shot a team total of 5-over 293. They are seven strokes behind Coastal Carolina for th lead.
Freshmen Rattika Sittigool lead the Penguins with a 1-under 71 and is tied for 10th while Puthita Khuanrudee recorded a 73 and is tied for 36th.
Katlyn Shutt shot a 2-over 74, Boardman graduate Jenna Vivo is a stroke behind with 75 and Victoria Grans shot a 77.
The second round will be held today with the tournament concluding on Tuesday.
