Bond set at $1M for suspect in Niles fatal shooting

NILES — Judge Chris Shaker of Niles Municipal Court set bond of $1 million this morning during the arraignment for Ryan M. Daniels, 28, of Montgomery Street Northwest in Warren in the early Sunday shooting death of Britney A. Mazanec, 33, of Niles.

No plea was entered on a charge of reckless homicide. If convicted, Daniels could get up to five years in prison. Another court hearing is set for 9:15 a.m. March 4 to determine whether the case will be bound over to a county grand jury, which can indict on different charges or agree with reckless homicide charge.

Mazanec was shot about 2:30 a.m. Sunday outside of the Hideway Lounge on Youngstown Road.

Her mother, Tammy Stone of Niles, said her daughter was leaving the tavern after having been there with friends.

"She was leaving in her car almost on [U.S.] Route 422 when she was shot," Tammy Stone said in the hallway after the hearing for Daniels. "What kind of harm could she have been to anybody?"

Britney worked at the Gulf gas station on Youngstown Road near the Burger King and has two children, ages 4 and 6. She was a Niles McKinley High School graduate.

Niles police and their records department said the initial police report on the shooting is not ready to release to the public.
