Community Champions week set for March

In celebration of the 16th annual March for Meals, a monthlong community-by-community celebration of Meals on Wheals, Trumbull Mobile Meals will host a Community Champions Week that will coincide with the Edward C. Taylor March for Meals Walk at the Eastwood Mall.

March for Meals commemorates the day President Richard M. Nixon signed into law a measure that amended the Older Americans Act of 1965 and established a national nutrition program for seniors 60 and older. Meals on Wheels programs from across the country have joined forces for the annual awareness campaign to celebrate the successful public-private partnership.

Community Champions Week will take place March 18-22. Trumbull Mobile Meals, in conjunction with the national Meals on Wheels programs, will invite elected officials, local celebrities and prominent figures to deliver meals, speak out for seniors and raise awareness of the positive community impact of these programs.

Statewide, nearly 30 percent of seniors live alone, and with 12,000 Americans turning 60 each day, these programs can provide every senior in need with the nutritious meals and friendly visits that will enable them to live healthier and independently in their own homes.

The Edward C. Taylor March for Meals will take place March 23 at Eastwood Mall.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., and the walk will begin at 8. For sponsor forms and registration information, visit www.trumbullmobilemeals.org.
