Zallow first male 4-time athlete of year

INDIANAPOLIS

Youngstown State senior Chad Zallow on Friday became the first four-time male to win the Alfreeda Goff Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award.

Oakland senior Rachel Levy earned the female Alfreeda Goff Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year Award.

Zallow leads the Horizon League in the 60 dash, 60 hurdles and 200. Levy ranks first in the conference in the one mile, 3,000, and 5,000.

Zallow has earned Nike Men’s Runner of the Week four times this season. He leads the 60 dash with a recorded time of 6.72 at the Youngstown State Invitational. In the 60 hurdles, the senior put up a time of 7.66 after posting the fastest times in the prelims and semifinals at the Penn State National Open. Zallow won that event by 0.12 seconds. At the Youngstown State Mid-Major Invite he ran a time of 21.37 in the 200m, the fastest time in the Horizon League.

Levy has received Nike Women’s Runner of the Week three times heading into the championship this weekend. The senior has broken three Oakland school records while competing in her final season. Levy leads in the one mile with a time of 4:56.57 which she ran at the Ice Breaker Dual Meet. She broke her own school record in the 3000m, posting a time of 9:34.45 at the Notre Dame Meyo Invite. Her time ranks first in the conference by 15 seconds. Levy claimed seventh place at the Iowa State Classic, recording a time of 16:36.31 in the 5,000m. Her time ranks first in the Horizon League by almost 30 seconds.

The Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Championship begin today at YSU’s Watson and Tressel Training Site. ESPN3 will televise the meet beginning at 3:20 p.m.

Blaze Glenn homers in Penguins’ 4-2 loss

TALLAHASSEE, FLA.

YSU’s Blaze Glenn hit a two-run homer in the first inning against Florida State, but the Penguins didn’t score again and eventually fell to the Seminoles 4-2 at Dick Howser Stadium.

YSU (0-4) kept the lead until the bottom of the sixth when Drew Mendoza’s two-run home tied the game for FSU.

Nander De Sedas hit a two-run shot in the seventh to give the Seminoles a 4-2 lead.

Colin Clark worked the first 51/3 innings for the Penguins, allowing a run on five hits. Clark got into trouble in the sixth and was relieved by Grant Kersh, who allowed Mendoza’s homer to right.

Travis Perry (0-1) finished the inning and the game, but allowed De Sedas’ homer to left-center field.

Antonio Velez (2-0) got the win in relief, allowing two hits in four scoreless innings for FSU. J.C. Flowers pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save.

Seminoles starter Drew Parrish went the first four innings, settling down after Glenn’s homer to left in the first also scored YSU’s Jeff Wehler.

Glenn and Cody Dennis each had two hits for the Penguins. Web Charles had YSU’s only other hit. Glenn’s homer was the Penguins’ lone extra-base hit.

YSU and FSU are scheduled to play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. today.
